1Sa 21:8 And David said unto Ahimelech, And is there not here under thine hand spear or sword? for I have neither brought my sword nor my weapons with me, because the king's business required haste.
1Sa 21:9 And the priest said, The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom thou slewest in the valley of Elah, behold, it is here wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod: if thou wilt take that, take it: for there is no other save that here. And David said, There is none like that; give it me.
(Up to this point, David had been less than honest with Ahimelech the priest. David is not there on the king’s business. The king’s business is wanting David captured and put to death. David is on the run and not on some mission from King Saul. David requests a weapon of some sort if the priest has any. Ahimelech the priest informed David that there was one weapon available. It is the Philistine sword of Goliath that David slew. It is wrapped up in a cloth behind the ephod. In other words, it was in a secure place, behind a sacred part of the high-priestly vestments. We can only imagine the reverence that the priests held for this sword. It was a symbol of God’s goodness and favor to Israel. It probably served as somewhat of a memorial of the victory in the Philistine war. The priest tells David that he can take Goliath’s sword if he wants to. In his mind, if anybody has a right to that sword it is David. This sword is highly regarded. If anyone is to remove it from the tabernacle and put the sword back into use it is David. In David’s eyes this was perfect. This weapon had proved itself in battles. The sturdiness and strength of this sword was had been tested. Perhaps the most enduring quality of this sword is the memories it brought back to David’s mind. God had been with David and given David victory. While that David was happy to have a good weapon perhaps, David should have remembered how he came to win it. David did not win the sword in battle with lies and half-truths. He did it with a bold trust in God. David defeated Goliath because he believed God and trusted God with the results.)

Hab 1:1 The burden which Habakkuk the prophet did see.
(Habakkuk had a burden. He had a concern that troubled him. Habakkuk saw the state of things and it bothered him. The problems of his people and of his nation mattered to him. When we think of the prophets, we think of Elijah, Isaiah, or Daniel. Habakkuk is not a prophet we typically think of. Like all of the prophets, to Habakkuk, something mattered. We should be thankful for people that care. We should be thankful that some people will not turn and go the other way because things matter. Memorial Day was a time to place flags or flowers on the graves of fallen soldiers. In the days and times we that are in, Memorial Day is often looked at as just a time to take a day off from work and cook out. Memorial Day has been also been turned into just another occasion to have a sale at the store or get a deal on a car. Shame on us if and when we forget. On this Memorial Day weekend, I would like for us to stop and remember or at least attempt to recognize some who had a burden. As we approach Memorial Day, we humbly accept and humbly recognize the sacrifices of those who have fought for our nation, our soldiers. Some of those fallen, we may have known them quite well. Many soldiers, like the prophet Habakkuk, we barely know their name. Some we don’t know their name. Like Habakkuk, to all of our fallen soldiers, something mattered.)

Matthew 12:1 At that time Jesus went on the sabbath day through the corn; and his disciples were an hungred, and began to pluck the ears of corn and to eat.
2 But when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto him, Behold, thy disciples do that which is not lawful to do upon the sabbath day.
3 But he said unto them, Have ye not read what David did, when he was an hungred, and they that were with him;
4 How he entered into the house of God, and did eat the shewbread, which was not lawful for him to eat, neither for them which were with him, but only for the priests?
5 Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless?
6 But I say unto you, That in this place is one greater than the temple.
7 But if ye had known what this meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless.
8 For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day.

(The Pharisees found fault with the disciples gleaning food on the Sabbath day. Jesus never violated God’s Law concerning the Sabbath or anything else. Jesus would not have approved of His disciples violating God’s Sabbath Law either. However, Jesus would break man-made legalistic additions to the Law. Pharisees had a lack of understanding of mercy above sacrifice. The Pharisees were all about man-made traditions. Jesus questioned the confidence the Pharisees had in their man-made traditions. Sometimes, they used those traditions to justify lifting principles like sacrifice above principles like mercy. They justify strict sacrificial law traditions above helping someone in need. The fact is that God would have them do just the opposite. Where two laws in seem to clash one with another in a circumstance that we cannot obey both, our obedience is due to that which is the more excellent law. In this case, as in David’s case, obedience to the law of mercy was the more important law. The disciples were hungry and were shown mercy. For any that are saved, we have been shown an even greater mercy. None can completely fulfill the Law. God has chosen to show us mercy instead of justice because of His Son Jesus. Prayerfully, we will keep that in our hearts and minds every day.)

1Sa 19:18 So David fled, and escaped, and came to Samuel to Ramah, and told him all that Saul had done to him. And he and Samuel went and dwelt in Naioth.
1Sa 19:19 And it was told Saul, saying, Behold, David is at Naioth in Ramah.
1Sa 19:20 And Saul sent messengers to take David: and when they saw the company of the prophets prophesying, and Samuel standing as appointed over them, the Spirit of God was upon the messengers of Saul, and they also prophesied.
1Sa 19:21 And when it was told Saul, he sent other messengers, and they prophesied likewise. And Saul sent messengers again the third time, and they prophesied also.
1Sa 19:22 Then went he also to Ramah, and came to a great well that is in Sechu: and he asked and said, Where are Samuel and David? And one said, Behold, they be at Naioth in Ramah.
1Sa 19:23 And he went thither to Naioth in Ramah: and the Spirit of God was upon him also, and he went on, and prophesied, until he came to Naioth in Ramah.
1Sa 19:24 And he stripped off his clothes also, and prophesied before Samuel in like manner, and lay down naked all that day and all that night. Wherefore they say, Is Saul also among the prophets?
(Why is this important? God is making a way of escape for David. With King Saul in this stoic state, David has ample opportunity to put a lot of distance between him and King Saul. When King Saul originally arrived, David knew that he had found him. David knows the intentions of King Saul and knows that he needs to leave promptly. With King Saul on the ground and unable to get up and move, David has the chance he needs. Once again, God has provided a way of escape for David. Even an evil person can be influenced and even controlled by the power of God. This is such a case. King Saul has certainly not surrendered to God voluntarily. King Saul has no desire to seek after God. King Saul is still self-willed and refuses to follow the Lord. King Saul was still an unspiritual man. King Saul as evil as he was, became very spiritual and prophesied at the moment the Spirit of the LORD came upon him. Let’s not forget the original mission of King Saul, bring back David in order to kill him. That did not happen. For a time, God made messengers of Saul do prophetic things. For a time, God made King Saul as a prophet, but in the end, God will make David king. God is still very much in control, and His Will is going to be accomplished.)

1Sa 19:18 So David fled, and escaped, and came to Samuel to Ramah, and told him all that Saul had done to him. And he and Samuel went and dwelt in Naioth.
(David came to Ramah. This is the place where Samuel dwelt. It was Samuel that had anointed David to be the next king. David just fled Jerusalem. He has had a lot going on. There have been several attempts on his life. King Saul definitely wants David dead. David needs some time to rest. He needs an opportunity to regroup. There is no better place for David to be than with the prophet Samuel, his spiritual mentor. David has a lot to talk to Samuel about. David told Samuel all that Saul had done to him. He probably told Samuel how King Saul had cast a javelin at him on several occasions. David probably told Samuel about the messengers of King Saul that came to his home to slay him. I imagine that David asked Samuel what that he needs to do now. He is probably asking for advice and direction on what needs to be his next actions. God had provided David a physical way of escape from King Saul and his assassins. God now provides David with a spiritual and mental way of escape. God provided Samuel the prophet to David for direction. God provided a safe place for David to rest. God has chosen David to be the next king of Israel. From a human standpoint, David should have already been dead. Just as God was in the battle that David had with Goliath, God is in this. God’s Will is going to be accomplished. There have been problems for David so far and there will be obstacles for David in the future. However, God will sustain David to fulfill His Will. Whether we are referring to David’s case or any other, God is able to fulfill His Will and His Plans.)

1Sa 18:17 And Saul said to David, Behold my elder daughter Merab, her will I give thee to wife: only be thou valiant for me, and fight the LORD's battles. For Saul said, Let not mine hand be upon him, but let the hand of the Philistines be upon him.
1Sa 18:18 And David said unto Saul, Who am I? and what is my life, or my father's family in Israel, that I should be son in law to the king?
1Sa 18:19 But it came to pass at the time when Merab Saul's daughter should have been given to David, that she was given unto Adriel the Meholathite to wife.
(Saul had originally promised to give his daughter to the man who killed Goliath. That original promise seems to have been conveniently forgotten. King Saul makes a new arrangement with David. “Behold my elder daughter Merab, her will I give thee to wife: only be thou valiant for me, and fight the LORD's battles”. The marriage offer must have seemed to David like a gesture of good will on the part of King Saul. Previously, King Saul had threw his javelin at David twice in an attempt to kill him. King Saul wants David to think that all of that is over and that he wants David for a son in law. In David’s mind, it would be an honor to be able to marry the king’s daughter. King Saul is trying to provoke David into taking risks that prove his bravery and dedication. In reality, King Saul has no intent of keeping his word to David. King Saul figured that this would be dangerous endeavor for David. King Saul wanted David dead and gone. In his plan, King Saul will not have to kill David himself. He expects David to be killed in a battle with the Philistines. In his plan, David will over extend his abilities and judgment and be killed in battle. This was a clever plan on Saul’s part. King Saul is trying to manipulate David using not only the marriage, but also David’s duty to God and his country. King Saul has a hidden agenda. He is concealing his actual motives. King Saul is trying to trick David into a situation that will suit his own evil agenda. King Saul never meant for David to marry Merab. King Saul wanted David to die in battle and simply used marrying his eldest daughter as bait. When that did not work, King Saul tries another strategy. He suddenly gave her to another man. King Saul probably hopes to make David angry. Saul hopes to make David jealous. If David retaliates, could be charged with treason and done away with. If David was mad enough to try to kill King Saul, then King Saul would have a reasonable case to put before the people to justify putting David to death. King Saul’s efforts come up empty. David still behaves himself wisely. King Saul’s efforts don’t affect David’s faith and dedication to God. David still is trying to carry himself in a manner that is pleasing to the Lord. As believers, what we can gather from David here is no matter what the world does to us, we must keep our focus on pleasing God. We may cannot change what those in the world may do, but we can stay faithful to our God.)

1Sa 18:6 And it came to pass as they came, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, that the women came out of all cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet king Saul, with tabrets, with joy, and with instruments of musick.
1Sa 18:7 And the women answered one another as they played, and said, Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.
1Sa 18:8 And Saul was very wroth, and the saying displeased him; and he said, They have ascribed unto David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed but thousands: and what can he have more but the kingdom?
1Sa 18:9 And Saul eyed David from that day and forward.
(David is suddenly the most popular man in Israel. King Saul is suddenly second in the popularity contest to David and he is mad about it. David gets credit for killing ten thousands. Saul only gets credit for killing thousands. David gets more honor than King Saul. The subordinate gets more honor than the superior chief. King Saul is insecure. Maybe his mind going back to something else. Maybe King Saul is remembering what the prophet Samuel told him, “The LORD has rejected you from being king over Israel.” Saul knew his sin disqualified him from being king. At least in the back of his mind, King Saul is worried. He has to be thinking about when God will replace him. King Saul has to be wondering when God will remove the throne from him and give it to someone else. Perhaps Saul recognized the Godly behavior of David. Perhaps, Saul recognized that God was with David. Saul sees David in God’s favor and David’s popularity with those in the kingdom. Perhaps, King Saul recognizes what is taking place. The next step for David in Saul’s mind is David taking over the kingdom. Now Saul is filled with mistrust and suspicion for David. Saul is suspicious of everything David says. Saul is suspicious of everything that David does. He is suspicious of the very young man that wants to do him nothing but good. King Saul is full of envy. He is looking closely at David. In Saul’s mind, David is his rival. King Saul is not the brave and intelligent leader that he once was. There is an old saying. Sin will take you farther than you want to go and keep you longer than you want to stay. Sin had gotten King Saul to this point. Leaving God and God’s Will can indeed have serious consequences.)

1Sa 18:1 And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.
(David is giving an account to King Saul right after the defeat of Goliath. We don’t know exactly everything that David said to King Saul, but we imagine that David recounted most of the details about what was done and what was said. To Goliath David had said “Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied”. To Goliath, David had said “his day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand”. To Goliath, David gave a solid reason that victory would come, “that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.” To Goliath, David had said “for the battle is the LORD's”. To King Saul and in the presence of Jonathan, we assume that David told of his words to Goliath. We can also assume, based on these prior words, that David continued to give all credit and glory to God for all that had taken place. Notice that “the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David” occurs after that David has finished speaking with King Saul. Jonathan heard David give an extended explanation of his heart and love for God. Jonathan had heard David speak of his faith in God. It is their love and admiration of God that knits them together. Jonathan and David both have a real relationship with the LORD God. That relationship to God is why that they love one another. They relate to one another because they have a similar relationship with God. Jonathan was surrendered to God. It seems that Jonathan could see God’s purpose for David. It seems that Jonathan knew that David was destined to be the next king. Jonathan submitted to God and was willing to forfeit any claim that he had on the throne. Jonathan set aside his own advancement to honor God and God’s choice for the next king. David surrendered to God as well. Yes, David is to be the next king of Israel, but not yet. It will be around 20 years or so before David would sit on the throne in Israel. David waited until God was ready. David submitted to God’s timing. The bond between Jonathan and David was close with one another for one main reason, they each loved the Lord even more than they loved the royal throne of Israel.)

Joh 20:11 But Mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping: and as she wept, she stooped down, and looked into the sepulchre,
Joh 20:12 And seeth two angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain.
Joh 20:13 And they say unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? She saith unto them, Because they have taken away my LORD, and I know not where they have laid him.
Joh 20:14 And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus.
Joh 20:15 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away.
Joh 20:16 Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master.
(Here Mary Magdalene doesn’t seem alarmed at the presence of the angels sitting in the tomb. Which seems odd. Let’s face it, a person does not see and speak to angels every day. She also did not at first glance, recognize Jesus. This could be because of the emotional state that she is in right now thinking the Body of Jesus had been stolen. She had seen Jesus die. Her Savior was dead and she was confident in that fact. Maybe she did not recognize Jesus through her tears. Maybe Mary Magdalene did not recognize Jesus because He is so different from the last time that she had saw Him. The last time Mary Magdalene saw Jesus, He was beaten, bloodied, and marred. The last time she saw Jesus, He was being crucified and looked nothing like Himself. After she assumed Jesus to be the gardener, Jesus simply spoke her name “Mary”. That was all that Jesus had to say. She recognized Jesus when He called her name. By simply calling her name, Jesus changed her entire circumstance. Her sorrow turns to gladness. Her desperation turns into delight. All is well. Jesus is alive. We are celebrating today what Mary Magdalene was at that moment. Jesus is alive. We are celebrating a Risen Savior. The glorious news that He is risen makes all the difference.)

Isa 52:14 As many were astonied at thee; his visage was so marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men:
(Isaiah gives a prophesy that describes Jesus on the Cross. Jesus had been scourged with whips containing pieces of bone, metal, and even stone. Then he had been beaten and a crown of thorns imbedded in his head. Through the bruises, the blood, and all the damage done physically to Him, the very form of Jesus had changed. Jesus did not look anything like what He did before all of this took place. With nails in His hands and feet, Jesus is crucified. I have saw a lot of artist’s renditions of Jesus hanging on the Cross. I have not saw any, not do I wish to, that accurately depict the condition of Jesus. No human being should have to endure the horror that Jesus endured. Make no mistake, He will not endure any of that anymore. Upon His return, none will mock Him, none will spit on Him, and none will beat Him unmercifully beyond human recognition. Jesus will never hang on a cross again. Jesus went through horror once so that He could be sacrifice for sin of all that would accept Him. All of what Jesus went through, He did for you and I. Jesus willfully accepted being the sacrifice for our sin. The price of sin has been eternally paid. There is nothing else required. Jesus redeemed every soul that would come to Him. The plan in the mind of God since the beginning of time is accomplished for all the world to see. Jesus fulfilled what He set out to do and made salvation possible. When Jesus died on the Cross “It is finished”.)
