Jesus said, “My house shall be called a house of prayer.” Yet how often do we neglect one of the greatest privileges we've been given as followers of Christ? Just as Jesus urged His disciples to watch and pray in Gethsemane, we are called to be a people who recognize our complete dependence on God and continually seek Him in prayer. Through Jesus, we have been given the incredible privilege of approaching our Heavenly Father with confidence, knowing that He hears us. May we be a church that doesn't simply believe in the power of prayer, but faithfully practices it.

This week’s passage: 1 Timothy 2:1-7

Here are some discussion questions to continue your worship throughout the week:
1. Prayer is a priority for Paul. Prayer, as Calvin says, is “the chief exercise of faith.” In other words, prayer flows from our dependence on and confidence in God who is faithful to us in Christ. How can you grow in faith? How can you grow in prayer?
2. We are told to pray all kinds of prayers for all kinds of people. Where can you grow in this area?
3. We are told to pray for those in authority so we can "lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way." How should this command change the way we think about and relate to our political leaders? How can you grow and help others in this area?
4. How can you grow in leading “a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way"?
5. According to v. 4, God wants all people (note that the “all people” in v. 2 are “kings and all who are in high positions”) to be saved and come to a knowledge of the truth. How do the character and works of God in Christ shape our pursuit of and witness to all kinds of people?
6. Spend some time reflecting on and talking about Christ as your mediator and ransom. How should the work of Christ for us and our salvation affect us?

Pray for All People
[1] First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, [2] for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. [3] This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, [4] who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. [5] For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, [6] who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time. [7] For this I was appointed a preacher and an apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. (ESV)

The same Word that brings us to faith is the Word that sustains us in faith. Romans 10:17 reminds us that faith comes from hearing the Word of Christ. Just as Noah trusted God's promises and responded in obedience, we are called to build our lives on the truth of Scripture, even when we cannot see what lies ahead. May we be a people who continually return to His Word, remembering His promises and trusting Him with every step.

Being rooted in God's Word should always lead to bearing fruit in our lives. At Providence, even our church logo reflects this: an open Bible as our foundation, with a flourishing tree growing from it. Just as Psalm 1 describes a tree planted by streams of water, we desire to be a church deeply rooted in Scripture and sound doctrine. But that truth isn't meant to stop with what we know; it should transform how we live, how we love others, and how we share the Gospel with the world. May we be a people whose deep roots in God's Word produce lasting fruit for His glory.

Knowing God's Word is about more than simply hearing it; it's about living it. In John 7, Jesus reminds us that a heart willing to do God's will is essential to understanding His truth. As followers of Christ, we're called not only to believe what Scripture teaches but to respond with faithful obedience. And we don't do this alone! As a church family, we grow together by sitting under God's Word, encouraging one another, and putting His truth into practice in our everyday lives.

2. What things can cause a believer's faith to slowly drift toward shipwreck today?
3. What does Paul mean by "handed over to Satan to be taught not to blaspheme"? How does church discipline serve as a protective boundary to maintain its purity and bring about repentance and restoration?

Join us tomorrow, October 18, at 10:00 AM for a special worship gathering. In lieu of our normal service times, we will meet as an entire church at 10:00 am. Our gathering will include the worship and preaching you’ve come to expect, plus a special time for outdoor baptisms! This is a churchwide event; Providence Kids will be closed, and The Bridge ministry will not meet this week.

What to Bring:
- Your kids! Again, it’s a family service.
- Some folding or camping chairs – seating will be limited.
- Sunglasses and possibly sunscreen, or possibly a blanket. (It’s October in Texas, so you never know…)
- Water and snacks – it might be a little longer than a standard service.
-Family and friends! Invite someone to join you. You may even want to gather your community group to enjoy it together.

By rejecting this, some have made shipwreck of their faith, [20] among whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme.

The key to standing firm in our faith isn't simply following a list of rules or trying harder to resist temptation; it's fixing our eyes on Jesus. When we meditate on who Christ is, what He has accomplished, and the beauty of His grace, our hearts are strengthened to resist temptation and remain rooted in Him. Practical steps have their place, but lasting spiritual growth begins with a deeper love for our Savior. The more we behold Christ, the more our lives are shaped by Him.
