Meet Simeon bar Yeshua
Simeon bar Yeshua is a character that Dan Ulrich has developed to help New Testament students imagine life in the Roman empire at the time many NT writings were being composed. Simeon was head of a prosperous household in Jerusalem until Roman armies destroyed the city in 70 CE. Although he survived the war, he was taken in chains from the burned remains of his house. Ten years after the war, he works as a slave for a pagan master named Lucretius in the city of Rome.
These experiences give Simeon the ability to describe both joys and challenges of life as a first-century Jew, whether as a householder or a slave. Meet and Eat on September 6 will be an opportunity to chat with Simeon. Please come with your imagination rolling, ready to meet a first-century friend.
