Who made the stars? Jesus made the stars.

Pastor Russell spent the whole morning in preschool and looked in no hurry to leave. Here is how it ended. A buggy ride. A prayer for mommy and daddy. A green heart colored right inside a red one.

Same lesson they opened with, from John 13:34: "just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another" (ESV).

Nobody in the nursery cares what you do the rest of the week.

Pastor Russell stepped in as a preschool volunteer for the morning. He was enjoying himself right up until he met a baby who liked the bouncer better.

Somebody holds a baby so a mom and dad can sit and hear God's Word. That is the work.

Jesus took the job nobody wanted, and He did it on purpose.

Pastor Russell took the morning off from grown-ups and spent it in preschool. The lesson waiting for him: the Passover meal, feet that were actually dirty, and the King of the world kneeling with a towel.

No watered down version. Just John 13, at a very small table.

There are a hundred voices telling you who to follow. Only one of them laid down his life for you.

In the fourth of the seven I AM sayings, Jesus calls himself the good Shepherd, the One who knows his sheep by name and whose sheep know his voice. Ron Cook teaches John 10 and traces the promise back to Ezekiel, where God vowed to come and gather the scattered himself.

Learning to follow him starts with learning to recognize his voice.

The job is what you do. The mission is why.

Love God, love the people He put near you. Same assignment, whatever the building.

Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men (Colossians 3:23). Careful work is love.

"If You had not loved me first, I would refuse You still."

That line from "All I Have Is Christ" is the whole gospel in one breath.

We like to think we found God. That we were searching, and He finally answered. But Scripture tells a different story. We were dead in our sin, running our own hell-bound race, indifferent to the cost (Ephesians 2:1-5). We would not have chosen Him. We could not.

So He chose first. He looked on our helpless state and led us to the cross. He bore the wrath that was reserved for us. Now all we know is grace.

"We love because he first loved us." (1 John 4:19)

This is why the song ends where it does. Not with our decision. Not with our strength to follow His commands. "My only boast is You."

The king had it all and couldn't sleep. Daniel slept in a lions' den.

Darius had the power, the wealth, the throne, and he spent the whole night wide awake. Daniel had a death sentence and a cave full of lions, and he slept. The difference wasn't circumstances. It was who each man trusted to keep watch.

In Psalm 121, Pastor Russell Howard points to a God who neither slumbers nor sleeps. The One holding your life is awake through every hour you cannot be.

So the thing keeping you up at 2 a.m. is not yours to solve tonight. He is already awake, already working. You don't hold on to Him. He holds you.
