Scripture - Romans 14:1-4

1 Welcome those who are weak in faith but not for the purpose of quarreling over opinions. 2 Some believe in eating anything, while the weak eat only vegetables. 3 Those who eat must not despise those who abstain, and those who abstain must not pass judgment on those who eat, for God has welcomed them. 4 Who are you to pass judgment on slaves of another? It is before their own lord that they stand or fall. And they will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make them stand.

Prayer Focus: As Paul begins to bring his letter to the Romans to a close, he reminds the church in Rome that not all followers of Jesus are in the same place spiritually. Some are newer, or “weak in faith,” and others are more mature in their faith. But the advice Paul gives is to welcome all. Do not pass judgement on those who abstain from eating meat and do not pass judgement on those who eat only vegetables. The meat available had most likely been sacrificed to an idol, so this is a question far more important than just a healthy diet. Welcome all because God has welcomed them. If God has welcomed them, who are we to stand in the way?

Exodus 12:14: 14 “This day shall be a day of remembrance for you. You shall celebrate it as a festival to the LORD; throughout your generations you shall observe it as a perpetual ordinance.

Prayer Focus: We began this week’s devotions with a reminder that these verses of scripture represent a break in the narrative saga of Exodus. Time and space are transcended, and the ritual of Passover becomes far bigger than any single place or group of people. Every time the ritual of Passover is enacted, God’s redemptive activity continues here and now. When Jesus Christ and his disciples gathered in the upper room to celebrate Passover, they were doing more than just remembering events of the past. They were experiencing the same liberating power of God known by those enslaved Israelites. For as the Jewish Passover liturgy says: “God brought us out of Egypt.”
Likewise, when we participate in the Lord’s Supper, we are not simply remembering the events of Christ’s passion that unfolded long ago. Rather, we are drawn into Christ’s saving work and nourished by God’s grace here and now. I pray that as we come to the Lord’s Table today, we may experience the saving grace of the God who liberated the enslaved Israelites at Passover and who, in Jesus Christ, liberates us from sin and death.

Exodus 12:13: 13 The blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you live: when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague shall destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.

Prayer Focus: How exactly does this sign of blood work? The lamb’s blood itself isn’t magical. It doesn’t possess any properties that automatically guarantee protection for those who paint it on their doorposts. And do we really think that God needs a sign of blood in order to recognize the Israelites from the Egyptians? No, God can’t possibly need the sign of blood in order to save the Israelites. Rather, it is the Israelites who need the sign. The sign of blood publicly and concretely marks the Israelites as God’s people. It makes God’s grace, protection, and love visible to the naked human eye.
It isn’t at all unlike our understanding of the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper. Like the blood of the lamb, the elements of bread and wine do not possess special, magical properties. Rather, they are sacred because they become for us visible signs of Christ’s grace. It is we, like the Israelites, who need those signs to help us see and experience God’s love for ourselves. Today, let us give thanks and praise to God who chooses to give us signs that allow us to know God’s love and grace. There is truly no greater gift than this.

Introduce yourself to someone you don't know and talk about one of the question prompts that will be on the tables. We hope to see you there!

Peanut Butter & Jelly Sunday

This Sunday, September 6, is Peanut Butter & Jelly Sunday. Current needs at the Care Center include canned potatoes, canned chili beans, canned collards, cooking oil & spray, salad dressing, Teriyaki sauce, frosting, and coffee. (NOTE: Any food, hygiene, or cleaning items are welcome, but they are currently overstocked on pasta and peanut butter.) Please bring your donations and deposit them in the collection box in the Narthex any time you are at church. Thank you again for generously sharing God's love with our neighbors in need.

Exodus 12:12: 12 I will pass through the land of Egypt that night, and I will strike down every firstborn in the land of Egypt, from human to animal, and on all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments: I am the LORD.

Prayer Focus: Thanks be to God??? It is difficult to discern good news from such a violent piece of scripture, especially as wars rage around the world and innocent people are caught in the crosshairs of devastating violence. When faced with texts like these, often called “texts of terror” because of the violence they portray, I find solace in this quote from Robert P. Carroll: “If reading the Bible does not raise profound problems for you as a modern reader, then check with your doctor and inquire about the symptoms of brain-death.”
The reality is that the Bible does not give us the answers to many things for which we would really like an explanation. This text is just one of countless examples. I won’t attempt to sugarcoat, whitewash, or tie the problems of this story up in a nice little bow. Rather, my prayer today is that the Holy Spirit might help us to approach this word from God to us today with humility, charity, and patience.
As my New Testament professor, Frances Taylor Gench, reminded us often: it is in the process of wrestling with scripture that we enter into deeper relationship with God. Scripture is holy and sacred because God continues to meet us in it and speak to us through it. As you wrestle with this heartbreaking story today, what do you discern to be the larger, most fundamental truth of this story? Perhaps for you, it is God’s shocking liberation of the once powerless Israelites? Or the power of God over and above the tyrannical powers of empire? Or the scandalous grace of God who promised to be God for Israel and never once broke that promise? Wherever your wrestling with this text leads you today, I pray that it may bring you into deeper relationship with God.
