Scripture - Psalm 43:5

5 Why are you cast down, O my soul,
and why are you disquieted within me?
Hope in God, for I shall again praise him,
my help and my God.

Prayer Focus: In a final verse of the psalm, the psalmist asks their own soul a question. “Why are you cast down and why are you disquieted within me?” Only one who has sung this song might ask these questions. For the Psalmist knows the journey from loss to life, from trial to deliverance, from exile to home. Pray that as we remember the saints from Unity who now sing the Lord’s praises in the everlasting kingdom, that we might hope in God for we too shall again praise the Lord.

Saturday, October 31
Scripture - Psalm 43:3-4

3 O send out your light and your truth;
let them lead me;
let them bring me to your holy hill
and to your dwelling.
4 Then I will go to the altar of God,
to God my exceeding joy,
and I will praise you with the harp,
O God, my God.

Prayer Focus: The psalmist’s request is for the Lord’s light and truth, for those will lead them to God’s holy hill and to God’s dwelling. They want to come back to their place of refuge and safety. It feels like the joy of return is all the sweeter due to the time away. Have you ever had that experience? Because you have experienced the depths, when you return to the heights you see even more clearly and rejoice with exceeding joy? Pray that the Lord will send light and truth so that you can see your way home today.

Do you have a special animal in your life? On Saturday, October 31, you are invited to drop by the front lawn of the church any time between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. with your pet for a blessing. All creatures great and small, real or imagined, furry or stuffed, scaly or covered in feathers are welcome. Have a pet who doesn’t travel well? We will have blessings for you to take home with you as well. We do ask for the peace of all God’s creatures that you bring pets on a leash or in a carrier. Hope to see all God’s creatures there!

Scripture - Psalm 43:2

2 For you are the God in whom I take refuge;
why have you cast me off?
Why must I walk about mournfully
because of the oppression of the enemy?

Prayer Focus: The psalm continues speaking to God and reminds God that the psalmist finds safety and refuge in the Lord. But in this moment the psalmist feels they have been cast off on their own. The oppression of the enemy has resulted in walking around mournfully. There are moments in our lives, especially after the death of a loved one, where we can feel cast off and untethered. If and when those moments come, pray that you might turn toward the Lord. God is big enough to hear your questions and your cries.

Scripture - Psalm 43:1

1 Vindicate me, O God, and defend my cause
against an ungodly people;
from those who are deceitful and unjust,
deliver me!

Prayer Focus: The second scripture we will look at this week is Psalm 43. As you will see over the next couple of days, this Psalm encompasses so many different emotions! It begins with a request for God to come and rule on the psalmist’s side in a trial or argument. It is a plea for deliverance and vindication. As you lift up your prayers today, from whom do you seek to be delivered? How can you pray for and with others who are seeking justice and deliverance?
