Scripture - Matthew 13:3-7

3 And he told them many things in parables, saying: “Listen! A sower went out to sow. 4 And as he sowed, some seeds fell on a path, and the birds came and ate them up. 5 Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and they sprang up quickly, since they had no depth of soil. 6 But when the sun rose, they were scorched, and since they had no root, they withered away. 7 Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them.

Prayer Focus: The first parable Jesus tells in this chapter is about a sower. He seems to be a quite haphazard sower as the seeds he throws fall all over the place. Some on a path where they are eaten by birds. Some on rocky ground where they spring up quickly, but have no root and so they do not last. Still more seeds fell among thorns where they young plants were choked. Pray that you might appreciate the abundance of a sower who would sow like this. Pray that you might recognize the risks that are present in the world that seek to thwart the kingdom of heaven and God’s abundance.

Scripture - Matthew 13:1-3a

1 That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the sea. 2 Such great crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat there, while the whole crowd stood on the beach. 3 And he told them many things in parables,

Prayer Focus: As a teaching and literary form, parables are not simply straightforward explanations of an idea or topic. By their vividness or strangeness, parables are designed to draw those who hear them into active thought. Parables draw the listener into the story and call for some kind of response. This week our “The Kingdom of Heaven is like …” series moves into two parables from the Gospel of Matthew (one in all-church faith formation and the other in worship). Note that both of these parables are shared with the crowds. In fact such a large crowd gathers around Jesus that he has to sit in a boat while the crowd stands on the beach. Pray that you might draw near to Jesus today. Pray that the parables of Jesus will draw you in and call for you to respond.

Scripture – As we begin this worship series, “The Kingdom of Heaven Is Like…” Today we will be singing the hymn “Comfort, Comfort Now My People.” This hymn offers a powerful description of what the kingdom looks like that Jesus’ ministry will usher in. I invited you to read these lyrics as you prepare for worship today:

1. Comfort, comfort ye my people,
Speak ye peace, thus saith our God.
Comfort those who sit in darkness,
Mourning neath their sorrows' load.
Speak ye to Jerusalem
Of the peace that waits for them,
Tell her that her sins I cover,
And her warfare now is over.

2. Yes, her sins our God will pardon,
Blotting out each dark misdeed;
All that well deserved his anger
He will no more see nor heed.
She hath suffered many a day,
Now her griefs have passed away;
God will change her pining sadness
Into ever-springing gladness.

3. For the herald's voice is crying
In the desert far and near,
Bidding all to true repentance,
Since the kingdom now is here.
Oh, that warning cry obey,
Now prepare for God a way;
Let the valleys rise to meet him,
And the hills bow down to greet him.

4. Make ye straight what long was crooked,
Make the rougher places plain;
Let your hearts be true and humble,
As befits His holy reign;
For the glory of the Lord
Now o'er earth is shed abroad,
And all flesh shall see the token
That his Word is never broken.

Prayer Focus: We hear this hymn in advent, but it’s fitting to sing today as we prepare to discern what the Kingdom of God will look like. Here, at the beginning of his ministry, Jesus is declaring that this kingdom is drawing near. Pray today that we might discern together what our roles might be as we seek to follow Christ’s ministry to bring God’s Kingdom near.

Scripture – Matthew 4:17

From that time Jesus began to proclaim, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.”

Prayer Focus: Scholar N.T. Wright says that, “Jesus’ reference here to the kingdom of heaven is not our escape from this world into another one, but to God’s sovereign rule coming ‘on earth as it is in heaven.’” This entire kingdom of heaven worship series that we are embarking on this summer is not about future salvation, it is about a call to action here and now. Pray this week that as we embark on this journey, we might respond by helping to build the kingdom of heaven here on earth for all people.
