Dear Plymouth,

This week, since it is already June, we are recognizing Pride! FOCO Pride is on Sat., 6/6, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Library Park, and I encourage you to attend.

On Sunday, our Open & Affirming Ministry Team (ONA) is planning a special service to recognize some of the most vulnerable among us. Yours Truly will be preaching from the lectionary. If you can open your Bible this week, I encourage you to look at Matthew 9:9-13 & 18-26 (view at https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew%209%3A9-13%2CMatthew%209%3A18-26&version=NRSVUE) and come to service with questions in mind and deep reflection on this sacred scripture. I can’t stress enough how important it is for us, as followers of Jesus, to see and acknowledge the marginalized, to include our LGBTQIA+ siblings. Being an ally is truly Christ-like!

Did you know that one reason why some people who call themselves Christian (not our church, of course!) condemn LGBTQIA+ people is due to an inaccurate translation of the Bible made in 1946? It’s true! (See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1946:_The_Mistranslation_That_Shifted_Culture) In reality, the Bible doesn’t prescribe that we marginalize or treat LGBTQIA+ people inhumanely. In Genesis, we learn from the story of Hagar that the God of the privileged is the same God of the marginalized. In fact, in Jesus’ day, Judaism recognized six genders! (see “More Than Just Male and Female: The Six Genders in Ancient Jewish Thought” by Voices on Sefaria-- https://voices.sefaria.org/sheets/37225.6?lang=bi). In Matthew 19, when referring to eunuchs, Jesus mentions three of the six gender-diverse people, and . . . (wait for it) . . . he blesses them! This group has many gifts to offer society and our church.

I can’t wait to see what ONA has prepared for us on Sunday and to continue exploring Pride, LGBTQIA+ identities, and the Bible with you!

Member in Discernment (for ministry)

Dear Plymouth,

As some of you know, I am a chaplain for Fort Collins Police Services and Poudre Fire Authority. On Wednesday, May 20, I was asked to lead the Invocation and Benediction for PFA and UC Health's "Survivor's Event.” Those present included survivors of heart attacks, stroke, car accidents, and even a rattlesnake bite.

Each person had the opportunity to come forward, along with the first responders who cared for them, and speak about what happened, their recovery, and say a few words to the first responders who helped them.

It was a deeply moving experience, as speaker after speaker shared tears of gratitude for being alive.

Gratitude doesn’t require tragedy or a near death experience to be valid. And yet, when we hold close the impermanence of this life, it can help awaken a new sense of aliveness. It may even cause us to cry out to God — thank you for breath.

Much love to each of you,
Rev. Kimberly

P.S. This Sunday we celebrate the Trinity; a way of understanding what we cannot possibly know — the nature of the Divine. We have a couple of ... ahem ... old-time comedians to help us out with a little "Who's on First" skit by Rev. Charles Woodward that tries to explain the Trinity. Marshall has some beautiful music planned, including a piece that Harmony Tucker will play on violin. And, as I do, I wrote a song for you all based on a couple of scriptures. We are looking forward to having you all join us for worship — in person or online.

A huge thank you to all of the youth and volunteers who helped to make our Youth for Change fundraiser for Faith Family Hospitality such a wonderful event. But most importantly, thank you for the generosity that this congregation continues to show in so many ways. We are grateful, and we are blessed. - Drew Angotti
