Perhaps you’ve heard these words before: “Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly” (Colossians 3:16). And, “Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it” (Joshua 1:8).
God invites us to spend regular, daily time with him in his Word. Your pastor fervently encourages study of Scripture. You recall a memorized and proudly recited passage in school. Your feed shows the social media post of your friend’s picture-perfect devotion life. It sounds amazing!
There is also a good chance these words left that small sliver of guilt as you picture all the unmarked days on your Bible reading calendar. The missed opportunities could be for a million reasons! Maybe it’s analysis paralysis; the simple fear of not knowing where or how to start causes us to put it off. Maybe it’s the mere busyness of life. It’s difficult enough to juggle family, friendships, work, and school responsibilities with enough time to make it to church once a week. Maybe you struggle with consistency. Maybe you aren’t understanding or connecting with the words you read. Maybe you just don’t even know how to study God’s Word.
Whatever the reason, why do we so often resort to living in this guilt when we are so freely offered God’s grace?
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). Dear sisters in Christ, you are not alone. Jesus calls us, as his daughters, to come to him for rest.
