Hebrews 12 says that something far more glorious is happening when we worship than what we can see with our eyes.
Through Christ, God brings His people into the heavenly assembly, so that we worship with reverent joy and unshakable hope.
That means that right now, as ordinary as our weekly gathering may appear, there is a spiritual reality greater than we can fully comprehend. When we gather in worship, heaven and earth meet. This is a theological term called the “Communion of the Saints”.

A renewal of vows ceremony helps us understand something important about worship. Renewing vows is about confirming and strengthening an existing relationship. It's a way of saying “I still do, and I always will.” The couple repeats promises they made years before. They remember what had brought them together and publicly recommit themselves to faithfulness for the years ahead.

There are many things going on in a worship service but the highlight of the worship service is in v. 13 when God meets His people in worship, and that reality transforms how we approach Him.

If someone asked you, “What happens on Sunday at church?” How would you answer?
You might answer: We sing hymns, read the bible, pray, and connect with other Christians. But, isn't there more to it? Perhaps you don't exactly know how to answer that question.
Many of us—whether we’ve been in church for years or are going for the first time—can find ourselves unsure of what is actually happening when we worship.
Our new sermon series is exploring what happens when we worship. Over the next several weeks we will come to know why we worship, grow in our appreciation of God and of worship, and begin to experience God's presence more as we worship together.
This morning we’ll start to address that by asking, “Why do we worship?”

Psalm 95 answers that question for us. It shows us worship is an encounter that God has initiated with his people so He may meet with us and bless us.

If you had to summarize your life in just a few sentences, what details would you include?

Maybe you're tempted to think your life feels too ordinary—almost unremarkable.
But Genesis 35 reminds us that God does His most important work in the middle of ordinary life. Through birth and death… through sin and sorrow… through everything that makes up a real human life. Something deeper is going on beneath the surface of ordinary life.
In every generation, God remains faithful to call a people to himself, make himself known to them, and guide them every step along their way from birth to death.

Genesis 34 is a graphic depiction of horrific acts including personal violation, kidnapping, blackmail and vengeance. It's a story about why God calls his people to holiness and must provide it for us.

This dark story leaves us with a question:
Who is right? Who is wrong?

Genesis 34 shows God’s people risking their holiness through wandering, weakness, and wrath. Still, God gives us a better way to keep covenant with him.
