We love that Authentic Community is one of our core foundations! Join us in making a difference through food and clothing donations, and support the homeless community by purchasing burritos from the Eye Love Project.

Welcome Steve Darnall as our newest staff member at Lifehouse Church Eureka - Steve Darnall is a teaching and small group Pastor at Lifehouse Humboldt. Steve was raised in a Christian home, but started questioning many beliefs at 13. Three years later he encountered Jesus community on a weekend retreat for teenagers (called a “Search”). What struck him most for the next year was seeing their deep relational unity though the people were very diverse culturally, politically and economically. This unity and inward compulsion drove Steve into reading the Bible voraciously and eventually encountering Jesus. Steve has been in lay ministry ever since. Steve loves connecting with God, and others, especially through scripture, nature, and small group interaction.
His education includes earning a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, a Teaching Credential and Masters in Education from Humboldt State University; and Bible and ministry education in Alaska and California.
Steve worked in construction, eventually owning his own business as an Electrical Contractor; at Humboldt State University he was on the faculty for the Computer Information Systems Dept, Mathematics Dept and Veterans Upward Bound Program; and worked in administration as program coordinator for the Veterans Upward Bound and Director of User Support Services (ITS).
Steve has decades (because he is old) of experience teaching in traditional and high engagement interactive formats His favorite topics are Scripture, Hesed Community, and Healthy Relationships & Leadership.
Steve and his wife, Karla, have been married since 1980 and have four children, Reuben (wife Nicki), Diego, Matthew (wife Kathleen), and Kathryn (husband Oliver). They also have many grandchildren.

Such a bummer! We got this nativity set up, and somebody stole the sheep. This is a historical set that used to stand outside one of the cemeteries. It was donated to us, and a couple of our artists have been restoring the set. We set out what was complete, and now the sheep are gone. Somebody knows something. Just bring them back; no questions will be asked of you. See the picture of sheep below. We had two, and they were both stolen. (Please share and maybe we can get it back)

I’ve been seeing lists like these on Facebook and thought it might be good to review if you’re wanting to give to the food pantry. Some tips may apply, some may not:

Some tips and guidance if you donate to food pantries derived from feedback by those who use them:
1. Everyone donates Kraft Mac and Cheese in the box. They can rarely use it because it needs milk and butter which is hard to get from regular food banks.
2. Boxed milk is a treasure, as kids need it for cereal which they also get a lot of.
3. Everyone donates pasta sauce and spaghetti noodles.
4. They cannot eat all the awesome canned veggies and soup unless you put a can opener in too or buy pop tops.
5. Oil is a luxury but needed for Rice a-Roni which they also get a lot of.
6. Spices or salt and pepper would be a real Christmas gift.
7. Tea bags and coffee make them feel like you care.
8. Sugar and flour are treats.
9. They fawn over fresh produce donated by farmers and grocery stores.
10. Seeds are cool in Spring and Summer because growing can be easy for some.
11. They rarely get fresh meat.
12. Tuna and crackers make a good lunch.
13. Hamburger Helper goes nowhere without ground beef.
14. They get lots of peanut butter and jelly but usually not sandwich bread.
15. Butter or margarine is nice too.
16. Eggs are a real commodity.
17. Cake mix and frosting makes it possible to make a child’s birthday cake.
18. Dish Soap / Dishwashing detergent is very expensive and is always appreciated.
19. Feminine hygiene products are a luxury and women will cry over that.
20. Everyone loves Stove Top Stuffing.
Most people buy what they think food pantry users want, but have never asked them. If you help families, single people, foster youth and the homeless, this list can help better tailor your donations!
