The 2025 observance of Veterans Day at Myrtle Grove Memorial Cemetery is occurring with the placement of flags at the graves of all of the 249 known veterans. The flags will be in place through the end of the day on Tuesday, November 11. The ten community volunteers who placed the flags this year included members of the Redwood Forest Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Redwood Empire Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. It's volunteer efforts, especially those of the grounds maintenance crew, that keep the cemetery ready to welcome visitors. Here's looking forward to a significant 2026 including the 165th anniversary of the cemetery and recognition of the 250th anniversary of the nation.

Here is the first of a couple of mysteries we don’t seem to be able to solve on our own so I’m putting this out in hopes that a family member can help:
This marker for Nellie Landrip has been in the storage shed at Myrtle Grove for as long as any of the volunteers can remember. Her
“Burial location” has always been the “floor of the storage shed”. Although the shed has not always been in that location, we’re (mostly) confident she is not buried beneath. She is not listed in any of our records as being buried at Myrtle Grove at all so can’t be sure she was moved to or from here. A search of her obituary shows burial at Rohnerville but Fortuna Cemetery Association shows no listing for her.

Are you related to Nellie? Do you know someone that is? Do we know where she was actually buried? We would like very much to get her stone to its proper location and could use some clues. Watch for the next mystery marker, coming soon…..

In observance of Veterans Day, flags will be placed on the graves of our more than 260 veterans on Saturday, November 9. Through the volunteer efforts of the Daughters of the American Revolution and others, we recognize the service and sacrifices of veterans of the Civil War, the Indian Wars, the Mexican-American War, the Spanish American War, and both World Wars, as well as peacetime service. There will be no formal ceremony at the cemetery on Veterans Day (Monday, November 11), but there will be a community program at 11:00 am at the Adorni Center. As always, the cemetery is open every day of the year from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm. Volunteers continue to maintain and improve Eureka's oldest (established in 1861) cemetery.

Flags on the graves of our more than 260 veterans will be in place starting on Saturday, May 25, thanks to volunteer efforts by the Daughters of the American Revolution and others. There will be no formal ceremony on Memorial Day, but the main flag will be flying and will be raised to full staff at noon. It is our honor to recognize the service and sacrifices of veterans of the Civil War, the Indian Wars, the Mexican-American War, the Spanish American War, and both World Wars, as well as peacetime service. New military headstones for 36 veterans have been placed over the last eighteen months. Additional new headstones are in the works. As always, the cemetery is open every day of the year from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm.

In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of the end of World War I in 1918. “Armistice Day” was observed in following years to honor those who served in the-then “war to end all wars”. Following World War II and the Korean War, the recognition was expanded (in 1954) to include all of those who have served honorably in the nation’s armed forces. Veterans Day stands in contrast to Memorial Day which is intended to honor those who have died in military service.

On Saturday, November 11, all veterans will be recognized in a brief 9:30 am program at Myrtle Grove Memorial Cemetery. Flags will be placed at the graves of each of the more than 260 veterans and special recognition will be provided for the veterans with new headstones.

Today, we placed five more Veterans markers. Four (Alfred Adams, John Brock, John Foulds, and Jacob Stratton), we set in the County Grounds, where we don’t have a specific location so placed them with several “unknown sailors” whose markers had been placed before. Moses Hutchins’ marker went in the G.A.R. section where his original marker may have been heaved up or absorbed(caressed?) by the roots of the giant pine tree. Five more proper markers to replace the temporaries when we flag for Veterans Day next month.

Be sure to pick-up a copy of the October issue of Senior News with a featured article about stalwart volunteer Debbie Topping. Debbie is part of the regular volunteer crew who weeds and edges and mows and keeps the grounds in order. And, she and the crew are the ones who also do the heavy lifting ... as in this weeks monument movement!! The volunteers are a friendly and welcoming bunch ...stop by any Wednesday at 10 and see how you might help. Thanks and onward!!

“That marker is sunken”, he said. “Let’s raise it up to ground level, it shouldn’t be hard”, he said. Turns out it was not a flat marker but another upright block . Took some effort but the Forbes children are standing up now though their marker will need a little more cleaning to make it right.

At the direction of the mayor and city manager, flags at all City of Eureka facilities, including Myrtle Grove Memorial Cemetery, are at half-staff today in memory of legendary local businessman Leon Warmuth. Leon had a great interest in local history and a deep patriotism. He always had questions about the pioneers and ancestors who are buried here. He appreciated and commented on our Memorial Day and Veterans Day flag displays and programs honoring our veterans. Best wishes always to Leon and his family.

Flags on the graves of our more than 260 veterans will be in place starting on Saturday, May 27. There will be no formal ceremony on Memorial Day, but the main flag will be flying and will be raised to full staff at noon. It is our honor to recognize the service and sacrifices of veterans of the Civil War, the Indian Wars, the Spanish American War, and both World Wars.

Of special note will be the presence of new headstones for twelve veterans who previously had no headstone, either government or civilian. Military headstones have been supplied by the Department of Veterans Affairs. New headstones are now in place for Civil War veterans Alfred Brown, Horace Manley Davis, Jason Ganoung, Percy James, William Coddington Martin, David Wayne Morris, David Roe, and Melvin Washington Stringfield. Additionally, World War One veterans William Steele Long, Victor Harry Loquist, Wallace Nicholson, and Albin Manel Wendin now have headstones. Additional new headstones are planned. The efforts of volunteer Diana Stockwell who doggedly pursued the paperwork involved and the other volunteers who installed the stones are especially acknowledged and appreciated.
