Here are some scenes from yesterday’s Mass and reception for the feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Bishop Bambera served as the principal celebrant and homilist for this historic liturgy at which the Diocese of Scranton was consecrated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in recognition of our country’s 250th anniversary. It was a great day to be both Catholic and American as we welcomed friends from throughout the diocese for prayer and fellowship.

An outdoor Eucharistic Procession concluded our 10:30 a.m. Mass today for Corpus Christi Sunday. Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament was celebrated in our Picnic Grove as we literally took our faith to the streets. “You have given them Bread from heaven…”

Today begins our annual novena to the Sacred Heart of Jesus! Prayers will be recited daily at both of our churches in Dupont and Avoca leading up to the June 12 Solemnity of the Sacred Heart. Join us for Mass and prayers each day. A first class relic of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, the French nun and mystic to whom Our Lord revealed the mysteries of His Sacred Heart, is exposed in our church for public devotion.

You are invited to Dupont on June 12 to celebrate the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus with Bishop Bambera who will celebrate the Mass, deliver the homily and lead the prayers consecrating the faithful of the Diocese of Scranton on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the United States of America. Clergy and laity are invited to the Mass and the potluck garden party that will follow in our Picnic Grove located between Everhart Street and Belarski Alley.

On June 11, Catholic Bishops across the United States will take part in a rare and historic spiritual moment – consecrating the nation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus as the country prepares to mark the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

Locally in the Diocese of Scranton, Catholics are being invited to participate in this moment in a special way as well.

For the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Most Rev. Joseph C. Bambera, Bishop of Scranton, will celebrate Masses at the Diocese’s two parishes dedicated to the Sacred Heart – located in Peckville and Dupont – as Catholics throughout the country unite in prayer for healing, renewal, and hope.

Everyone is invited to Sacred Heart Peckville on Thursday, June 11, for a Vigil Mass at 7 p.m.

On Friday, June 12, everyone is once again welcome to Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish, Dupont, PA for a Mass on the Solemnity itself at 5:30 p.m., followed by a potluck dinner.

After nine years of faithful service to Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, Kathy Vojta is leaving as Parish secretary. She has accepted the position of Executive Assistant to the Judicial Vicar at the Diocesan Tribunal located at the Chancery Office in Scranton. In this full-time capacity she will assist Fr. Petro, the Judicial Vicar, and other members of the Tribunal staff with the application of the Church’s canon law pertaining to marriage. We are very grateful for her good work in Dupont and are also happy to announce that Kathy will remain in the service of Sacred Heart Parish in the part-time position of Financial Secretary, for which she will be responsible for bill pay and budgeting.
We are also happy to announce that Sacred Heart parishioner and local funeral director, Gregory Zawacki, will assume the new part-time position of Administrative Assistant of Scared Heart of Jesus Parish. Gregory is well-known in the community and serves as the President of the SH Holy Name Society, a Picnic Committee member and a member of the SH Finance Council. He will continue in these positions, as well as funeral director of the Lokuta-Zawacki Funeral Home, Dupont. In this capacity he will assist Fr. Petro in the administration of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish Office.
We are also happy to announce that the new housekeeper for the Sacred Heart of Jesus Rectory and Parish Office will be Fr. Petro’s mother, Maria Elena Petro. Having retired from the family business, the former Petro Hardware & Supply Co., Inkerman, she will be responsible for the part-time work involved in keeping her son, his house and his cat tidy. “Thanks, mom!”
These parochial assignments become effective June 1. At that time the new office hours for Dupont will take effect: Mondays, 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Wednesdays, 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and Fridays, 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Please welcome our new parish employees. They look forward to working with their fellow employees as well as their counterparts in Avoca for the benefit of all our parishioners.
