St. Paul’s makes history at the ā€œGreat History Challengeā€ national finals in Columbus, Ohio this weekend!

Our Saints history buffs performed so well in this competition this year….

All 6th-8th graders competed at school earlier with an online competition.
Over 30 (about half) of our kids qualified for the regional competition at Westminster a few months back. In that group, 15 (about half) qualified for the national championship in Columbus, Ohio (he discovered America you know).

There was about 350 students at the nationals from all over the country.
We met families from Oregon, Texas, Florida and everywhere in the nation.

We had 8 students attend the nationals and performed so very well!

All eight scored significant points in the prelims and 5 of our eight advanced to the playoff round (top 60) in their grade.

Alex Quattlebaum, Ryker Weber, Clayton Claus, Nate Peters, Case Weber, Jack Cash, Earl Akers and Gunnar Keyser were our history experts.

Alex, Ryker, Clayton, Case and Gunnar advanced to the playoff round.

Ryker ended up 8th place- in 6th grade-in the nation !

Alex finished in 6th place- in the country for 6th grade ! Alex was in 51st place going into the playoffs and then got into the zone (a historic zone) and rocked it all the way to the top 6, incredible finish, Alex!

Gunner Keyser was dominating all weekend ! He maxed out on points in ALL 9 of his prelim rounds and advanced to playoffs with a perfect score ! He then maxed out in his first two playoff rounds !! Still perfect !
He made it to the top 6 eighth graders (a really strong group). Gunnar finished 6th place in the United States of America for 8th grade !!!

If this was a team competition St. Paul’s may have been National Champions—wow, what a spectacular performance from all of our history studs !

Way to go Saints !!
Amazing job !!

Thanks to all the teachers, families and special students at St. Paul’s!

To God be the Glory ! šŸ’›šŸ–¤

On the way to the ā€œGreat History Challengeā€ some students stopped by the National Museum of the US Air Force in Dayton.
It is one of the world’s largest museums, and spectacular.

There were at least four questions in the competition we learned at the museum !

Note the photo of Jack and friend under the famous WWII B-17 bomber the
ā€œMemphis Belleā€.

They were checking out the infamous ball turret machine guns on the bottom. Jack’s friend wondered what it would be like to be the dangerous ā€œBelly Gunnarā€ ??

We also saw the plane the ended WWII, ā€œBoxcarā€ that dropped the last atomic bomb, ā€œFat Manā€.

Another highlight is the ā€œAir Force Oneā€ that carried the body of JFK back to DC after his assassination. Lyndon Johnson took the oath of office on that ride back (famous photo with Jackie Kennedy).
