What a joyful Kick-Off Sunday at First Presbyterian Church of Davenport!

Today, Ezekiel reminded us that “wherever the river flows…everything will live.” And there were signs of life everywhere.

It was our first Sunday with our new Associate Pastor, our choir returned from summer break, our youth acolytes and Bible bearers are back, our third graders received Bibles, and we blessed backpacks for the new school year. Then we celebrated with a community picnic, bounce house, and…yes…a chance to dunk the pastor while raising money for our Deacons.

Three and a half years ago, our congregation was emerging from a season of turmoil after four years without an installed pastor. Today, we worshiped, laughed, celebrated, and got a little wet together. We’ve come a long way.

I want to be the kind of pastor who doesn’t stand at a distance, but shares life with the people I’m called to serve…even when that means sitting above a tank of water on a chilly September day!

Where the river flows, everything will live. Today, I saw a whole lot of life. Thanks be to God!

Today, we remember.

We pray for those who lost loved ones on September 11, 2001; for those who carry the wounds of that day; and for all who continue to live with the consequences of violence and hatred.

May we remember not only the lives lost, but the courage, compassion, and solidarity that emerged in the days that followed.

May we choose peace over fear, compassion over hatred, and love over violence.

May we never forget. And may we never stop working for a world where every life is sacred.

Amen.
