“Signs and wonders and miracles won’t produce faith. They don’t give life to dead souls. The Spirit must work sovereignly in the minds of people to bring them to the knowledge of Christ. That’s what happened when Paul was preaching in Philippi and Lydia was listening to him. Luke wrote that ‘the Lord opened her heart to respond to the things spoken by Paul’ (Acts 16:14). Salvation is supernatural. It is all of grace––sovereign, free grace. God can use signs and wonders for that.”

“We are kept by the sovereign grace of God. It is His work. We don’t keep ourselves in the faith by our will or work. The Father and Son hold us firmly in their hand. Christ tells us in John 10:29. The Holy Spirit has sealed our hearts for the day of redemption. Paul tells us Ephesians 4:30. God’s children are eternally secure and will all persevere in the faith to the very end because of the Father’s unchangeable love, the Son’s prayers and the grace of the Holy Spirit.”

“If the penalty is severe for violating revelation given by angels (Ten Commandments), how much more severe will it be for violating revelation given by Christ, who is far greater than the angels. If we neglect that revelation, the final revelation, from the Son, the gospel of salvation, there is no escape. No escape from what? That is the crucial question for understanding this book. What will we NOT escape if we neglect the gospel of Christ? Eternal judgment. It is that serious.”

“The great lesson of Yom Kippur was that the cleansing of the people’s sins required a blood sacrifice. But also that the sacrifice the priest of Israel offered was never sufficient. He never sat down. He stood, and returned year after year because the work of sacrifice was never finished. It wasn’t sufficient. A new priest and a different sacrifice were needed. Christ is that Priest. He is a better priest. The author will tell us that He is a priest after the order of Melchizedek. He completed His work and sat down.”
