When you fulfill your wedding vows, are you therefore doing away with them?

Of course not.

Fulfilling your vows means you are faithfully living out what you promised. It does not mean the covenant is canceled, erased, or no longer relevant.

That is important when we read Yeshua’s words:

“Do not think that I came to abolish the Torah or the Prophets! I did not come to abolish, but to fulfill.”
— Matthew 5:17

Many people have been taught that “fulfill” means Yeshua completed the Torah so that no one needs to live by it anymore. But that would be like saying that once a husband fulfills his wedding vows by loving and honoring his wife, the marriage covenant has been done away with.

No—his faithfulness confirms the covenant.

Yeshua did not come to destroy, cancel, or contradict His Father’s instructions. He came to embody them perfectly, teach them correctly, reveal their fullness, and show us what faithful obedience looks like.

And He immediately continued:

“Until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall ever pass away from the Torah…”
— Matthew 5:18

Heaven and earth are still here.

So perhaps the question is not, “Did Yeshua obey Torah so that I would not have to?”

Perhaps the better question is:

“If I follow Yeshua, shouldn’t I desire to walk as He walked?”

Fulfilling a covenant does not abolish it.

It demonstrates faithfulness to it.
