Dear Sacred Heart Family,

Bernard (Bernie) Andrew Lehman, a member of our Parish Family since 1996, died on Monday, 12 June 2023 at the Falkville Nursing Home. He was 97 years old.

Bernie was born in Chicago, IL. When Bernie was still very young, his family moved to St Louis, MO. In 1942, when he was 19, Bernie joined the U.S. Army Air Corps. During WWII, Bernie served as a bombardier and nose gunner on a B-24 bomber. After the War, Bernie went to college and received a degree in Physical Education. He spent several years teaching at various Salesians of St. John Bosco High Schools. In the process, he and his family moved a number of times over the years.

In 1967, when Bernie was 49, he met Joann Murr, also a school teacher. They were married in 1968. They had five children: Keith, Michael, Br. Leo Mary, MFVA, Gregory and Rebecca. Joann died in 1976, when the family was in Hammon, LA. Bernie retired from teaching and became the owner/operator of several excavation companies.

In 1996, Bernie completely retired and moved to Hanceville, AL, where he was every active in the Church. Bernie was a talk-aholic. He would talk to anyone, anytime often evangelizing them at the same time, because Bernie loved to share his faith. He had a special devotion to the Most Holy Eucharist and to the Blessed Mother. He was also very charitable with his time, talents and treasure. In fact, the picture above speaks volumes about who Bernie was as a person.

Here are the arrangements for Bernie's funeral.

Wednesday, 21 Jun 2023

10:00am - 11:30am: The Mass of Christian Burial at Sacred Heart Church. Fr. Leonard Mary, Superior of the Franciscan Missionaries of the Eternal Word, will be the Celebrant and Fr. John O'Donnell, O.S.B. will be the Homilist.

Burial will follow in the Alabama National Cemetery, located in Montevallo, Alabama at 2:00pm, Thursday, 22 Jun 2023.

Please pray for the repose of soul of Bernie Lehman, and that he is either already in the Heavenly Kingdom united with his beloved Joann, or well on the way. Please also pray for Bernie's children and their families. May God grant them the graces of peace, acceptance, perseverance, and many warm memories of their Dad, Father-in-Lawl or Grandfather.

Eternal rest grant unto Bernie, O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul and all the souls of the Faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Fathers’ Irreplaceable Role in Welcoming Life

Most Reverend Shelton J. Fabre, Archbishop of Louisville

Although fathers do not physically carry their children from conception, fathers can still be overwhelmed by an unexpected pregnancy. We Christians must support men who, in following the example of St. Joseph, choose to embrace their role as a father in all circumstances, but especially in challenging situations. St. Joseph was unexpectedly called to fatherhood amid extremely confusing and difficult circumstances. However, despite many obstacles, St. Joseph chose to be faithful. St. Joseph chose life by listening to God’s will and consciously deciding to be a father to Jesus, the Son of God. Pope Saint John Paul II said that fathers are called to exhibit “generous responsibility for the life conceived under the heart of the mother” (Familiaris consortio 25). Like St. Joseph, all fathers are uniquely entrusted with the protection and defense of both mother and child and, in this way, safeguard the sanctity of human life. But biological fathers, because they do not physically carry the child, sometimes fail to truly father their children.

Our society increasingly tells fathers that they should have no say in the lives of their unborn children, no opportunity to choose to father their children. Our society seems to restrict the decisions regarding an unborn child solely to the discretion of the mother. In the face of false messages about fatherhood, we must respond with the truth that the role of a father “is of unique and irreplaceable importance” (FC 25). We know that the assistance and support of the father of a child, or lack thereof, can often be a deciding factor in a woman’s decision to choose life. Tragically, there are men who sometimes pressure mothers to make the decision to abort the child, sinning grievously and making the cowardly choice. These men are not following the example of St. Joseph and are not exercising true, spiritual fatherhood.

This is because fatherhood extends beyond simple procreation and biology. Fatherhood is first a spiritual reality, because fatherhood has its origins in God who chose to reveal Himself to us as Our Father, sending his only Son for the sake of our salvation. Fathers therefore have a special and unique role “in revealing and in reliving on earth the very fatherhood of God” (FC 25). Fathers have a vital, unique, and important role to play in the personal and spiritual development of their children, and in reflecting the love of God the Father himself. Fathers are called to show the world the virtues of a tender protector, while living out the virtues of humility and courage.

In all circumstances, but especially in difficult circumstances, a father needs to be encouraged to faithfully accept the role entrusted to him by God and support the mother of his child. Through our prayers and through the intercession of St. Joseph, patron of fathers, may fathers come to know the irreplaceable role they hold in the lives of their children, and the responsibility they share in welcoming God’s gift of new life!

May the Sacred Heart of Jesus flood every member of our Parish Family with the knowledge of His unfathomable love for each and every one of us, and remind us that He is "a man like us in every way, except in sin," and may we grow ever closer to the Sacred Heart thorough this 40 Hours of Adoration.

Altar Society Planning Meeting

Wednesday, June 7 at 12:00 noon

Family Life Center Location

The Sunday bulletin announcement was not correct, as we will only have planning session meetings in June and July. Our regular meetings will be on the first Tuesday nights of each month, beginning on Tuesday, August 1, 2023 at 6:00 pm in the Family Life Center.

The Altar Society will be preplanning on Wednesday at noon, in the Family Life Center at Sacred Heart Church, for the coming year. Cynthia Daniel and Vicky Dawson will be helping to guide the group, in finalizing details for the coming year.

At our May Altar Society Meeting, Cynthia reminded us to pray for discernment in choosing a path for positive outcomes in serving our church through the Altar Society.

Cynthia discussed things to work on and selecting an opportunity for service on some of the following committees or activities for the upcoming year: Welcoming Committee, Outreach Committee, All Souls Day Chili Dinner, German Dinner, Communication Committee, Social/Spiritual, Liturgical Support, Vacation Bible School, snacks in collaboration with the LIHM Sisters. Cynthia also extended an invitation to the members to join small group discussion on June 7 at noon for planning and decision making on committees. She encouraged everyone to be prayerful in their discernment with the Holy Spirit in deciding which committee they would best be of service to within the Altar Society.

The above italics is just a sprinkling of some seeds that you might have watered and given life to, such as the coming week of Vacation Bible School, Alive in the Spirit, and volunteering. Thank you for helping Betty Bissot and the LIHM Sisters!!

The committees have been determined in line with our goals and plans for the coming year. Some of the committees are not finalized, as to who will be leading or participating in each committee. That position could be waiting for you! Please don’t be left out. Answer the call if God is speaking to you. We would love to have you join us and share your input in this planning session. We realize that not everyone is able to attend, therefore, we will update you with the results and provide you with a more in-depth look at opportunities and the needs for our larger church events.

Last week, Father Patrick spoke about Pentecost and the Holy Spirit. When I left mass, I took one word with me to sum it up, UNITY. Please pray for the Altar Society as we endeavor to serve.

Thank you,

A NOVENA FOR LIFE: DAY 9

Reading (Lk 1:66):

All who heard these things took them to heart, saying, “What, then, will this child be?” For surely the hand of the Lord was with him.

Versicle:

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
—for He has looked with favor on His lowly servant.

Prayer:

Lord, so often we cannot recognize Your work in the lives of others. Grant that, like John’s relatives, we may see You working in all,
and, freed from envy, we may give You glory.
For You live and reign forever. Amen.

🙏🏼Thank you for praying with us🙏🏼
