Discipleship does not begin with self-improvement, moral effort, or religious sincerity—it begins with new birth. Apart from the Spirit’s work, we are spiritually dead, even when we appear religious, busy, or sincere. Jesus' work as our Savior is not advice for the alive; it is resurrection for the dead.
