The Collect
ALMIGHTY God, who didst inspire thy servant Saint Luke the Physician, to set forth in the Gospel the love and healing power of thy Son; Manifest in thy Church the like power and love, to the healing of our bodies and our souls; through the same thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Epistle
2 Timothy iv. 5.
WATCH thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry. For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing. Do thy diligence to come shortly unto me: for Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, Titus unto Dalmatia. Only Luke is with me. Take Mark, and bring him with thee: for he is profitable to me for the ministry. And Tychicus have I sent to Ephesus. The cloke that I left at Troas with Carpus, when thou comest, bring with thee, and the books, but especially the parchments. Alexander the coppersmith did me much evil: the Lord reward him according to his works: of whom be thou ware also; for he hath greatly withstood our words.
The Gospel
St. Luke x. 1.
THE Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come. Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest. Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves. Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes: and salute no man by the way. And into whatsoever house ye enter, first say, Peace be to this house. And if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon it: if not, it shall turn to you again. And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give: for the labourer is worthy of his hire.

Propers for ST. EDWARD,
Confessor
October 13.
The Collect for the Day
O GOD, who hast crowned the blessed King Edward, thy Confessor, with everlasting glory: make us, we beseech thee, so to venerate him on earth, that we may reign with him hereafter in heaven; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Collect
O ALMIGHTY God, who hast called us to faith in thee, and hast compassed us about with so great a cloud of witnesses; Grant that we, encouraged by the good examples of thy Saints, and especially of thy servant ----------, may persevere in running the race that is set before us, until at length, through thy mercy, we with them attain to thine eternal joy; through him who is the author and finisher of our faith, thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Or this.
O GOD, who hast brought us near to an innumerable company of Angels, and to the spirits of just men made perfect: Grant us during our pilgrimage to abide in their fellowship, and in our Country to become partakers of their joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Epistle
Hebrews 12:1-2.
SEEING we also are compassed about with so great a of cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Or this.

The Epistle

Philippians 4:4-9.
REJOICE in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice, Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand. Be anxious for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.
The Gospel

St. Matthew 25:31-40.
WHEN the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: and before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats: and he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: for I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
Or this.

The Gospel

St. Luke 6:17-23.
JESUS came down and stood in the plain, with the company of his disciples, and a great multitude of people out of all Judea and Jerusalem, and from the sea coasts of Tyre and Sidon, which came to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases; and they that were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed. And the whole multitude sought to touch him: for there went virtue out of him, and healed them all. And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed be ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh. Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake. Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy: for, behold, your reward is great in heaven.

Luke 7:11-17

After healing the centurion's servant near Capernaum, Jesus is traveling southeast from Galilee towards Judea. Twenty miles into the journey he arrives at Nain. Nain is a town on the Galilee-Samaria border.
As he is about to enter the city, a funeral procession is exiting the city. A young man is being buried who is the only son of a widow. We must remember that in those days the only help for a widow would be received from one of her sons. There are no social services available for anyone. In these situations families took care of their own. It would be common practice for three generations to live under one roof. This poor widow had only one son and he had just died. It was and is a common practice in Judaism to bury a person on the day they died or if they died during the night to bury them the following morning.
Jesus and his party are entering the city. “And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not” (Luke 7:13). The key words in this verse are “had compassion.” Jesus knew the situation and the problems this widow would face. She had not only lost a son but how would she be able to sustain herself in the future? Who would look after her? “And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood still, And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise” (Luke 7:14). What do you suppose those carrying the bier and the rest of the funeral procession think about Jesus instructing a dead man to arise? “And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak, And he delivered him to his mother” (Luke 7:15).
I know that if I had been part of that funeral procession I would be freaking out about now. The crowd must have been in awe and amazement of what Jesus had just done. We must be clear — this man was raised from the dead! This is not a resurrection. He does not now have a glorified body. “And there came a fear on all; and they glorified God saying, That a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God hath visited his people” (Luke 7:16).
Remember that these are Galileans. They are descendants from the Ten Tribes of the old Northern Kingdom. Eleven of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus were Galileans. Only Judas Iscariot was Judean. A careful reading of verse 16 indicates that these Galileans recognized that Jesus is the long-awaited Messiah. Verse 17 indicates that the story of the raising of the widow's son spread throughout all of Judea. “And the rumor of him went forth throughout all Judea, and throughout all the region round about” (Luke 7:17). The Greek word logos, was translated to the English word rumor. We should all know that “logos” means “word”, but it also implies communications — the telling of an event. Word is probably a better translation to use than rumor as rumor today has negative meanings.
As Anglican Christians we believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God. In today's Epistle reading (Ephesians 4:1-6), Saint Paul urges us that we be of one mind in spreading the word of God. “There is one body, and one spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism. One God and Father of all,
who is above all, and through all, and in all” (Ephesians 4:4-6).
With literally thousands of denominations, how can we be of one Faith?
Some denominations do not even recognize the necessity of baptism. Many do not believe in the doctrine of the Real Presence in the Holy Communion.
People calling themselves leaders of the Church are the ones causing the many divisions within her. As Anglican Christians we need to examine the Nicene Creed and use it for the sake of unity. The Church must be sacramental. She must contain the Seven Sacraments. They are Baptism, Holy Communion, Confirmation, Confession, Anointing of the sick, Marriage, and Holy Orders.
Anglican Christians recognize the first two, Baptism and the Holy Communion, as being necessary for salvation. The Church must be Liturgical. She must offer the Holy Communion on Sundays, Holy Days, even daily if possible. The readings for the Mass should be from the Authorized Version (King James Version with Apocrypha) or some other version authorized by the canons of the Church. It is our Anglican Book of Common Prayer that serves as the liturgical book on the Altar and in the pews. Let us examine how the Nicene Creed fits in with all of this.
I believe in One God: Christians and Jews believe that there is but one God.
The Father All Mighty: Jesus himself taught us to call God the Father.
Maker of Heaven and Earth, And of all things Visible and Invisible: Anglican Christians believe that God created both the visible world (matter) and the invisible world (spirits).
I believe in One Lord Jesus Christ: Jesus Christ is Lord of Lords and King of Kings.
The Only Begotten Son of God: Christ was not created but was always with the Father. He is the Word made flesh.
Begotten of his Father before all Worlds: Jesus is eternal with the Father.
God of God, Light of Light: God the Son exists in relation to God the Father.
Very God of very God: God the son is not half God. He is fully God.
Begotten, not made: Some Christians believe that God the Father
made God the Son. God the Son always was. There was never a time that He did not exist.
Being of one substance with the Father: God the Father and God the Son are equally divine. They are of the same substance or essence of divinity.
By Whom all things were made: God the Son is the Word made flesh. He is the active force of creation.
Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven: Do to the limits of our language we picture heaven as being “up.”
And was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary, And was made man: God the Son truly became a human person taking his
manhood from the Virgin Mary. Jesus of Nazareth is fully God and fully man.
And was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate: He suffered and was buried: Jesus suffered as any human would on the cross. He died
and was buried.
And the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures: Jesus was resurrected bodily according to Scripture. This resurrection is the defeat of Satan, sin, and death.
And ascended into heaven, And sitteth on the right hand of the Father: Jesus is bodily in Heaven and is preparing a place for those who believe on Him.
And he shall come again, with glory, to judge both the quick and the dead; Whose kingdom shall have no end: Jesus is coming again to judge the living and the dead with righteousness. His kingdom cannot be destroyed. His followers will live forever with Him in heaven.
And I believe in the Holy Ghost, The Lord and Giver of Life: The Holy Ghost has been sent to the Church (the people) to sustain them until the Second Coming of Christ. He dwells in the hearts of every Christian and guides us in all of our actions.
Who proceedeth from the Father and the Son: The Holy Ghost was sent by the Father and the Son , (“And the Son” does not appear in the original Creed. It is known as the filoque and is not used in Eastern Churches).
Who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified: This is the Three Person of the Holy Trinity.
Who spake by the prophets: It was the Holy Ghost who guided the prophets.
And I believe in One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church” Jesus Christ only established one Church. These are the Four Marks of the true Church.
I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins: Holy Baptism grants us the remission of all sins including the original sin of our first parents.
And I look for the Resurrection of the dead: And the life of the world to come: Christians look to the Resurrection of the body. We will all have glorified bodies and live with Christ in heaven for eternity.
Amen: So be it.

MOST high, almighty, and good Lord: Grant thy people grace to renounce gladly the vanities of this world, that, after the example of blessed Francis, we may for love of thee delight in all thy creatures, with perfectness of joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Epistle
Galatians 6:14-18.
GOD forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature. And as many as walk according to this rule, peace be on them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God. From henceforth let no man trouble me: for I bear in my body the marks of the Lord Jesus. Brethren, the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.
The Gospel
St. Matthew 11:25-30.
JESUS said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes. Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight. All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him. Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
