There are several people I know who have lost loved ones this week, and I want to remind the church of something we often forget:
It is okay to grieve.
It is okay to cry.
It is okay not to be okay.
It is okay to take your time.
You do not have to be strong for everybody else while your heart is breaking. Take the time you need. Cry if you need to cry. Talk if you need to talk. Be quiet if you need to be quiet. Grief looks different for everybody, and nobody has the right to tell another person how they should grieve.
When I tell someone, “You’re going to be okay,” I am not saying that it doesn’t hurt. I’m saying Yah is not going to leave you here.
I’m saying that just as He has carried you through other difficult seasons, He is going to see you through this one too. Sometimes people simply don’t know what to say—and that’s okay.
But please don’t feel like you have to say something deep. Don’t tell them, “They wouldn’t want you crying.”Don’t tell them, “At least they’re not suffering anymore.” Don’t try to explain away their pain.
They already know those things.
But knowing doesn’t make the loss hurt any less.
The person who passed may no longer be suffering, but the people left behind are still learning how to live with the absence.
So if you don’t know what to say…
PRAY. 🙏🏾
If you don’t know what to do…
PRAY. 🙏🏾
And please don’t ask someone, “What do you need?” if you have no intention of helping meet that need.
Sometimes the greatest ministry isn’t a speech.
It isn’t a Bible verse. It isn’t an explanation.
Sometimes it’s simply sitting beside someone, holding their hand, giving them a hug, and saying:
“I’m here. I’m praying for you.” And if you don’t know what else to do…
JUST PRAY.
Because there are moments when words fail, but Yah never fails. To everyone grieving right now:
Give yourself permission to grieve. Give yourself permission to cry. Give yourself permission to heal at your own pace.
You don’t have to pretend you’re okay.
Yah is with you in the grief, in the tears, in the silence, and in the healing.
And He will see you through. 🤍🙏🏾
“Yah is near unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. Psalm 34:18
