Welcoming Critique and Remaining Controlled
Scripture Reading (NKJV) - Ecclesiastes 7:5, 9
“It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, Than for a man to
hear the song of fools.”, “Do not hasten in your spirit to be angry,
For anger rests in the bosom of fools.”

Family Commentary
Wise people are willing to listen when they are corrected. Foolish people only want praise and compliments. God often uses parents, teachers, pastors, and friends to help guide us in the right direction.
Solomon also warns about anger. Quick anger can damage relationships and cause us to make poor decisions. A person with a good name learns to stay calm, listen carefully, and respond with self-control.

Family Discussion Questions
Q: Why can correction sometimes be hard to hear?
A: Because pride makes us want to think we are always right.
Q: How can correction actually help us?
A: It helps us grow, avoid mistakes, and become wiser.
Q: What should we do when we feel angry?
A: Pause, pray, speak gently, and ask God for self-control.

Family Prayer
“Father, help us accept correction with humble hearts. Teach us to speak kindly and control our anger. Help our family reflect patience, wisdom, and grace in every situation. In Jesus’ name, amen.”

Family Activity
“Pause Before Speaking” Game
Materials: None
Take turns giving pretend frustrating situations (someone interrupts, spills something, loses an item, etc.). Before answering, every person must pause for five seconds before responding. Discuss how slowing down helps control emotions.

A Good Name: Serious Rather Than Foolish
Scripture Reading (NKJV) - Ecclesiastes 7:2-4
“Better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting, For that is the end of all men; And the living will take it to heart. Sorrow is better than laughter, For by a sad countenance the heart is made better. The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning, But the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.”

Family Commentary
Solomon teaches that wise people think seriously about life. Fun and laughter are not wrong, but wisdom grows when we remember that life is short and eternity matters. Sad or difficult moments often teach us more than easy and entertaining moments. A person with a good name before God learns from life and thinks carefully about how they live. God wants our family to value wisdom over foolishness and eternal things over temporary pleasures.

Family Discussion Questions
Q: Why does God say it is better to go to the house of mourning?
A: Because difficult moments help us think seriously about life, eternity, and our relationship with God.
Q: Does God want us to never laugh or have fun?
A: No. God gives joy, but He also wants us to grow wise and thoughtful.

Family Prayer
“Lord, help our family value wisdom more than foolishness. Teach us to think seriously about how we live and to honor You with our choices. Help us build a good name that reflects Your love and truth. In Jesus’ name, amen.”

Family Activity
“Life Jar” Activity

Have each family member write one thing that truly matters in life (faith, kindness, honesty, serving others, etc.). Place the papers in the jar and read them aloud. Discuss which things last forever and which things are temporary.

Jesus Is Our True Satisfaction
John 10:10 (NKJV)
“I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.”

Family Commentary
Ecclesiastes 6 shows the sadness of life under sin: wealth without health, experiences without satisfaction, possessions without peace, and people trying to replace God. But Jesus came to give abundant life. Only Christ can satisfy the deepest needs of the soul. He forgives sin, gives eternal hope, and fills our lives with purpose. Families who build their lives on Jesus can experience peace even during difficulties.

Family Discussion
Q: What kind of life does Jesus offer?
A: Abundant and eternal life.
Q: How is Jesus different from worldly possessions?
A: Worldly things fade away, but Jesus satisfies forever.
Q: What can families do to grow closer to Jesus?
A: Pray together, read the Bible, worship, and serve others.
Q: Why is salvation the greatest gift?
A: Because it gives forgiveness and eternal life with God.

Family Prayer
“Jesus, thank You for giving true life and lasting joy. Help our family seek You more than wealth, possessions, or worldly success. Draw us closer to You and teach us to live for Your glory. In Your name, amen.”

Family Activity
“Living Water Object Lesson”

Show the empty cup and explain that hearts feel empty without God. Pour water into the cup while reading John 10:10 and discuss how Jesus fills our lives with lasting joy and purpose.

Wanting to Be God Instead of Trusting God
Ecclesiastes 6:10–12 (NKJV)
“For it is known that he is man; and he cannot contend with Him who is mightier than he.”

Family Commentary
People often want control over everything. We want life to go exactly as we plan. But Solomon reminds us that we are human and God alone is sovereign. We are not stronger or wiser than Him. Sin tempts people to replace God with themselves. Humility means recognizing that God knows what is best. Instead of fighting against God’s plans, families should learn to trust Him even when life is confusing.

Family Discussion
Q: What does it mean that “he is man”?
A: We are human, limited, and dependent on God.
Q: Why do people struggle with wanting control?
A: Because sinful hearts want independence from God.
Q: What should we do when we do not understand God’s plans?
A: Pray, trust Him, and obey His Word.
Q: How does humility help our family?
A: It teaches us to listen, serve, forgive, and trust God together.

Family Prayer
“Lord, forgive us for the times we try to control everything ourselves. Help us remember that You are God and we are not. Teach our family to trust Your wisdom and follow Your ways with humble hearts. In Jesus’ name, amen.”

Family Activity:
“Blindfold Trust Walk”
Materials: A blindfold or scarf. Create a simple safe path in the house. One family member wears the blindfold while another gently guides them with instructions. Afterwards discuss how trusting God is like depending on a faithful guide.

Possessions Without Satisfaction
Ecclesiastes 6:7–9 (NKJV)
“All the labor of man is for his mouth, and yet the soul is not satisfied.”

Family Commentary
People work hard to earn money and collect things, but possessions never fully satisfy the soul. Sin causes people to always want “more.” Solomon says this endless chasing is like “grasping for the wind.” God teaches us contentment. Contentment means trusting God and being thankful for what He has already provided. Families can fight greed by practicing gratitude and generosity.

Family Discussion
Q: What are some things people always seem to want more of?
A: Money, toys, clothes, attention, or entertainment.
Q: What does “contentment” mean?
A: Being thankful and trusting God with what we have.
Q: Why is greed dangerous?
A: It can pull our hearts away from God.
Q: How can families practice generosity?
A: Sharing meals, giving to others, donating items, and helping neighbors.

Family Prayer
“God, help us not to chase after things that cannot satisfy. Teach us to be thankful for what You have given us. Help our family live with generous hearts and trust in Your provision. In Jesus’ name, amen.”

Family Activity
“Needs vs. Wants”
Materials: Paper and pen. Draw two columns labeled “Needs” and “Wants.” As a family, list items under each category. Discuss how God faithfully provides our needs and why we should be careful not to let wants control us.

Desirable Experiences but Empty Hearts
Ecclesiastes 6:3–6 (NKJV)
“If a man begets a hundred children and lives many years... but his soul is not satisfied with goodness...”

Family Commentary
A person can have a long life, a large family, and many experiences, yet still feel empty inside. Sin affects the mind and emotions. People often search for happiness in achievements, entertainment, or popularity, but only God can satisfy the soul.
Jesus offers peace and joy that circumstances cannot take away. Families should encourage one another to seek God daily instead of depending only on earthly success.

Family Discussion
Q: Can someone look happy on the outside but still feel sad inside?
A: Yes. Many people hide their struggles.
Q: Why do earthly things fail to fully satisfy us?
A: Because our hearts were created to know God.
Q: What are some healthy ways to encourage one another emotionally?
A: Listening, praying together, speaking kindly, and spending time together.
Q: Where is true satisfaction found?
A: In a relationship with God through Jesus Christ.
Family Prayer
“Father, sometimes our hearts feel empty or discouraged. Help us find our joy and peace in You instead of in temporary things. Teach our family to encourage one another with love and truth. In Jesus’ name, amen.”

Family Activity
“Encouragement Chain”
Materials: Strips of paper, tape or staples, markers.
Each person writes encouraging words or Bible truths on paper strips. Connect them into a paper chain and hang it somewhere visible as a reminder that God’s truth strengthens hearts.

Wealth Without Health
Ecclesiastes 6:1–2 (NKJV)
“There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, and it is common among men: a man to whom God has given riches and wealth and honor, so that he lacks nothing for himself of all he desires; yet God does not give him power to eat of it, but a foreigner consumes it. This is vanity, and it is an evil affliction.”

Family Commentary
Solomon observed that some people have everything money can buy, yet they cannot enjoy it. Sin has affected the whole world, including our bodies. A person may have wealth but still struggle physically. This reminds us that health, strength, and joy are gifts from God—not things we can guarantee with money. Our family should learn to thank God for daily blessings like food, rest, and time together. True joy comes from God, not possessions.

Family Discussion
Q: What are some things money can buy?
A: Food, houses, clothes, cars, entertainment, and medicine.
Q: What are some things money cannot buy?
A: Peace, salvation, love, joy, health, and eternal life.
Q: Why should we thank God for our health?
A: Because our strength and life come from Him.
Q: How can we honor God with our bodies?
A: By resting well, eating wisely, serving others, and avoiding sinful habits.

Family Prayer
“Lord, thank You for providing for our family. Help us remember that money and possessions are not the source of true joy. Thank You for our health and strength today. Teach us to use our bodies and resources to honor You. In Jesus’ name, amen.”

Family Activity - “Gratitude Basket”
Materials: Paper, pencils, bowl or basket. Each family member writes down three physical blessings they are thankful for (examples: eyesight, hands, food, sleep, energy). Place them in the basket and take turns reading them aloud together.
