This Sunday, May 31, the confirmation service that we will celebrate is a joyful occasion for the whole congregation. We will give thanks for our confirmands: Sonja, Cecilia, Annie, and Zachary. As they stand before family, sponsors, and fellow believers, they publicly profess their faith and affirm their baptismal life in Christ. With prayer and the laying on of hands, the church asks the Holy Spirit to strengthen them for a lifetime of faith, service, and witness. It is a powerful reminder that no one walks the Christian life alone; we are upheld by God’s grace and surrounded by the prayers of the church.

This Sunday, May 24, is Pentecost Sunday, when we hear the dramatic way that the Holy Spirit blows in like a mighty wind to shake those early disciples out of their stunned complacency and send them out into the world to tell the story of Jesus in myriad languages. In Sunday’s, May 17, readings the risen Christ ascends into heaven and his followers are assured that the Spirit will empower them to be witnesses throughout the earth. However, before he leaves them, he lifts up his hands and blesses them. We don’t really know what Jesus said when he blessed those disciples before his ascension. But just as he blessed those his first disciples, he blesses us still today so we might be blessings to others. Today Pastor Gladys shared some stories of her experiences as a Black pastor in the ELCA at the Faith, Hope & Love event at Abiding Presence Lutheran Church. We gathered to hear the stories of three communities that have historically experienced exclusion from the church and society, and to place ourselves firmly on a path that will lead to justice and inclusion. Today’s event focused on immigration, LGBTQIA+ inclusion, and racial justice. Thank you to the planning team, the New Jersey Synod, ELCA, the Synod Youth Mission Team, and each of the story-sharers for bringing us together for this day of witness and hope.

This Sunday, the Fourth Sunday of Easter, is traditionally known as Good Shepherd Sunday. We’ll ponder how to incline our ear to the Shepherd’s voice, especially when so many other voices vie for our attention.
