Don’t bow the knee. Ask the Father to take away the cup if He would and wills, but do not take the devil’s shortcut…that way is never shorter and it never delivers on its promise, but only strips us of the flowering fruit, the glory planned for us, even if through death and resurrection.

Who is the Lord? What has He done? Why should He be praised by all the earth?

Psalm 66 gives us a taste of the answers to these questions, through the lens of history. Come and see, come and hear, what the Lord has done. He is awesome in deed and mighty in power. Let all the earth praise Him!

What does David do when he is reviled?

He uses that as an opportunity to trust in the Lord. He relies on the Lord to take vengeance, because God is great at it; He does not miss. So what is your approach when attacked? Do you go to the Lord for help?

Yes. We should agree with the atheist. The one who rejects the god that is not there; the god of our imaginations. Instead, we are to rejoice in and recount the wonderful works of the Lord; the God that is, and is not silent. All of creation declares His handiwork!

In Psalm 61 David prays for protection from the enemy. He pleads for the Lord to lead him to the Rock that is higher than he; to be sheltered under His wings.

Christ is the Rock, the great High Priest, who sacrificed Himself for us so that we can be protected from our enemies. The Lord’s presence and by His might - that is where and how we are protected.

Jesus is not your homeboy.

The warning for the American churchman is that the Lord alone should be your refuge in the one you turn to for help. He is our God, and He loves us with the same love that He does His son. We should know this, love this, and proclaim this.

Is this a holy war?

No.

The reason is this: Holy wars are only carried out by God’s holy people; God’s priestly people. The only entity on earth that can carry out a holy war, after the resurrection of Christ, is His Church. Which she is called to do, daily.

How are we to speak and persuade? Peter gives us the grid of our speech in Acts 11. We wield the sword of the Spirit; the Word of God! And our aim is to see the very man or woman who you wielded the sword against, alongside you worshipping God!
