Richard Rohr wrote, “If the mystery of the Trinity is the template of all reality, what we have in the Trinitarian God is the perfect balance between union and differentiation, autonomy and mutuality, identity and community.” This mystery is richly experienced in deeply personal relationships with the Divine. The biblical witness captures aspects of this relationship despite the limits of language. The mystery invites us to be open to encountering God anywhere, at any time and in any place. “Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end." Pentecost was the beginning of the Spirit’s work in the church, not the end. The same Spirit that roared like wind also coos like a dove. The Spirit is calling us to live faithfully, love deeply, and to walk humbly.
In a culture that is fascinated by bombast, let’s attune our listening for the Spirit’s murmur. Let’s be people who can hear God’s whisper despite the noise, who can follow the Spirit’s gentle leading, and who can carry peace into a world that desperately needs peace.
