On this Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time, Bishop Dolan invites us to ponder James Tossot’s painting, “Ordaining of the Twelve Apostles.”

At first glance it’s a quiet scene. But when you look again, you notice everything is in motion. Jesus stands at the center, but the apostles are already beginning to move outward. This is not a moment of rest, it’s a moment of sending — because once you encounter Christ, you are never meant to stay in place.

We are not simply participants of the Church. Through baptism, each of us becomes an apostle — within the apostolic Church — to be sent into the world to bring the presence of Christ to others.

Word and Art” is a weekly video series exploring a renowned work of art connected to Sunday’s Gospel. Bishop Dolan brings an exciting and insightful perspective to the series as he earned a Master of Arts degree in Liturgy/Church Art and Architecture from St. Patrick’s Seminary and University in Menlo Park, Calif.

School supplies are more than pencils and notebooks — they’re confidence, preparedness, and opportunity for local kids heading into a new school year.
Last year, Foothills Food Bank helped support over 1,000 children in our community through school supply distribution, local school partnerships, and family assistance programs.
This year, the need is expected to grow — and we’re asking our community to come together once again.
🎒 We are officially kicking off our 2026 Back-to-School Supply Drive!
From June 1 – July 1, we’ll be collecting:
✏️ School supplies
🎒 Backpacks
📚 Classroom essentials
Donations can be dropped off at:
📍 Foothills Food Bank & Resource Center
📍 Old Black Canyon Highway location
Every backpack, every notebook, and every pencil helps a child start the school year feeling supported and prepared.

June is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

The Sacred Heart is the ultimate symbol of Christ’s love—both human and divine, wounded and merciful, passionate and compassionate. Catholics venerate the Sacred Heart to:

Acknowledge Jesus’ immense love and suffering for humanity’s salvation.
Offer love, trust, and reparation in return for his mercy.
Unite themselves with Christ’s mission of redemption and mercy.
Find spiritual comfort and strength in times of trial and suffering.
This devotion invites believers to enter into a deeper relationship with Jesus, recognizing his heart as the source of all grace.

Memorial Day is an important time to pause and pray for members of the military who have died in service to our country. All of us at St. Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Church are grateful for their sacrifice, and pray that our world may know peace.

What does it mean to be a Christian? Certainly, it means to believe in Jesus Christ; that he is the Son of God, that he was crucified and rose from the dead, and that he is the savior of all mankind.

But in today's Gospel, Jesus makes it clear that Christianity is about more than just believing in him. It is about becoming like him. "As the Father has sent me, so I send you." Being a Christian literally means being committed to the same mission of Jesus: bringing salvation to the world.

But can we, mere humans after all, truly carry on Christ's work under our own power? Of course, we can't, which is why he doesn't leave us alone. He sends us his very Spirit.

It is no coincidence that today, on Pentecost Sunday, we celebrate both the descent of the Holy Spirit and the founding of the Church. Why? Because they are inseparable. The Church's core identity is to be on mission, to evangelize, to spread the Gospel, and the Holy Spirit is the person who animates this great work.

So today, St. Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Church family, let's pray not only for an outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Let's also pray that we respond by carrying on Christ's mission.
