THE SUNDAY OF THE HOLY FATHERS OF THE FIRST ECUMENICAL COUNCIL — MAY 24

On the seventh Sunday after Pascha, the Church honours the Fathers of the First Ecumenical Council—a day that falls on May 24 in 2026.

Gathered in the city of Nicaea in the year 325, these 318 holy fathers established the foundational dogma of the Holy Trinity and composed the greater part of the Nicene Creed, which is still sung by the whole church during the Liturgy today. Among the participants were some of the Church’s most beloved saints, including Saint Spyridon of Trimythous and Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker.

May the Fathers of the First Council inspire us to live by the truths they defended.

Many of us have experienced the grievous wounds war leaves in our hearts, our families, and communities. Today, we remember all those who laid down their lives in war, as a sacrifice of love for their families, friends, and nation. We ask our Most Merciful and Man-loving God to remember them, to grant them rest, and to relieve the pain left by their departure, so often too soon.

May the Lord grant to all those who have given their lives for our nation forgiveness of any offenses they may have committed, may He grant them rest where the righteous repose, and make their memory to be eternal.

Today we honor and remember the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives to protect the freedoms we enjoy every day.

“Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”
— John 15:13

Christ reveals that the highest form of love is sacrifice. Memorial Day reminds us of the men and women who willingly gave their lives so that others may live in freedom, safety, and peace. Their courage reflects the selfless love that Christ Himself demonstrated upon the Cross.

Memory eternal to the fallen.
May their sacrifice never be forgotten.

Holy Pentecost theologically completes the way in which we worship God.

In our services and prayers, we often refer to God in three hypostases: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

In this way, we articulate the mystery of the Holy Trinity.
