At the heart of it, a bishop is a pastor to the whole diocese. That means clergy, lay leaders, congregations, and anyone seeking the Church's care.

A bishop visits congregations, confirms new members, preaches, listens, counsels, and walks alongside communities as they figure out their next faithful step.

A bishop is also a pastor to pastors. Every priest and deacon serves under a bishop's pastoral care. That relationship keeps each congregation's ministry connected to the wider life of the diocese and the whole Church.

🛡️ What Is a Bishop? Part 4.

A bishop carries a serious responsibility: guarding what's been handed to the Church throughout the ages: our faith, our sacraments, our promises, and our shared life together.

Guarding the faith means helping the Church stay grounded in the Gospel. Guarding unity means tending relationships across congregations and communities, even when that's hard. Guarding discipline means helping the Church live with honesty and accountability.

None of that happens without wisdom, patience, courage, and a whole lot of prayer.

⛪ What Is a Bishop? Part 3.

Wyoming is a big place. Our congregations are spread across mountains, prairie, ranchland, and small towns. Each of our congregations and communities are different.

A bishop's job is to help hold all of that together. Not by making everyone the same, but by keeping us connected in prayer, mission, and mutual care.

In the Episcopal Church, that unity is a shared project. A bishop doesn't lead alone, leadership is held together with the Standing Committee, diocesan convention, clergy, and lay leaders. Bishops, clergy, and laity share authority. That's part of what makes us "Episcopal": led by bishops, governed together.

A bishop gathers us around Word and Sacrament so that a lot of different congregations can live as one body.
