Philippians 4

The impact of Philippians Chapter 4

1 Therefore, my beloved and longed-for brethren, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord, beloved. 2 I implore Euodia and I implore Syntyche to be of the same mind in the Lord. 3 And I urge you also, true companion, help these women who labored with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the Book of Life.

4 Rejoice in the Lord always.

Again I will say, rejoice!

5 Let your gentleness be known to all men.

The Lord is at hand.

6 Be anxious for nothing,…..
….but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;

7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy--meditate on these things.

9 The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me,

these do,

and the God of peace will be with you.

10 But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly that now at last your care for me has flourished again; though you surely did care, but you lacked opportunity.

11 Not that I speak in regard to need,

for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content:

12 I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.

13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

14 Nevertheless you have done well that you shared in my distress. 15 Now you Philippians know also that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church shared with me concerning giving and receiving but you only. 16 For even in Thessalonica you sent aid once and again for my necessities. 17 Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the fruit that abounds to your account. 18 Indeed I have all and abound. I am full, having received from Epaphroditus the things sent from you, a sweet-smelling aroma, an acceptable sacrifice, well pleasing to God.

19 And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

20 Now to our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen.

21 Greet every saint in Christ Jesus. The brethren who are with me greet you. 22 All the saints greet you, but especially those who are of Caesar's household. 23 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.

Ten Secrets for the Cure of Worry

Pray for, welcome, permit and allow the peace of God to Gird/sure up, fortify, strengthen, garrison keep your heart and mind through Jesus Christ.

Philippians 4:7

and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Renounce all worry; then by prayer, supplication, and thanksgiving, make all requests known to God.

Philippians 4:6

Use the weapons of spiritual warfare

2 Corinthians 10:4-6

For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled.

The supply comes before the everlasting kingdom, giving us the ability, strength, and direction to the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and His everlasting Kingdom of God.

Interesting that he says this.

I think this statement is for the “I got this, I’m good, chill!!, I’m not gonna do this or that, but are you doing the these things?

Because if you’re not doing that short, sided blindness is sure.

Listen:
Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted. Gal. 6:1

The pastoral heart of Peter Vss 12-14 is refreshingly sad
His constant care even in the preparation of his demise is unmistakably beautiful, reassuring of his love, even to making sure that there would be a constant reminder of the “these things“displaying his enduring commitment to those that have been trusted to him in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:10-14

Gifts and the giving

The theme of chapter 4 is contentment

Contentment’s foundation is the Peace of God

“Godgotdis,” A. Butler

Epaphroditus returned to Paul bearing gifts from the church at Philipi

Interestingly, his name means lovely and charming.

He brought a lovely and charming gift of care that was flourishing again in Paul’s heart

He wasn’t referencing their lack of but the lack of opportunity.

Giving is something that is beyond the need, though it supplies it.

Giving is good because it declares trust in a different dependence.

He declared his trust in the Giver of great gifts, our Lord and Savior

Vs. 11
I have learned:

This is not always the case when we’re struggling

Do we learn by the things that we grow through?

Yes, grow through. We’re not just going through them if we’re paying attention, we are growing through them.

Paul stated he learned:

He had lived through so many things that it became a contentment in God that he trusted Him more than anything.

Contentment isn’t natural to humankind. We often want the next thing. I Learned! Paul said, and we must!

Contentment is not the theoretical alone it is lived out

God’s grace oi is ever supporting in our times of being abased

This is a very hard and important lesson to learn.

Learn to be patient or you’ll become one.

“There are a great many men who know a little how to be abased, that do not know at all how to abound.”

“When men are put into a pit like Joseph, they look up to see the starry promise and hope for an escape. But when they are placed on top of a pinnacle and have much, their heads grow dizzy, and they become ready to fall” A proverb inspired by Charles Spurgeon.

Philippians 4:13
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

We have to be careful with this verse, not to take it out of context. This verse can lend itself to a super-Christian, elite superiority thinking, not that we are not able, that is accurate, but must be anchored in Christ. Striking the proper balance!

Let us remember the condition that Paul was in when saying this.

Let us remember the conditions that he found himself in in the past when he learned this

When we are sailing the ship called the USS ALL THINGS, be sure to check the rudder and make sure that it is engraved with John 15:5.
“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abide in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.”

Let’s pause for a minute:

Vs. 10: Them: your care

Vs. 11-13: Paul: I can

Vs. 14-16: Them: you only

Vs. 17-18: Paul: I have all

Vs. 19: Them: all your needs

Gratitude for the concerning care and giving

What a gracious reminder to them that he counted that a blessing

Vss. 14-16

You have done well

You shared in my distress

You alone helped

You sent it once and again

Vs. 17-18: Amazing correlations of this gift:

Fruit that are bounds on your account

A sweet smelling aroma

An acceptable sacrifice

Well, pleasing to God

We have no way of knowing what the gift actually was or how much it was, but we know that Paul spoke of its incredible value, even if it was a meager offering

His expressive words are all reminiscent of past sacrifices at the altar and future glory of inheritance.

The progression of a heavenly gift:

The gift is given: Jesus: Grace and Mercy

The gift has received: Salvation

We give over ourselves to Him: Obedience

He supplies our need: Provision

We give gifts to others in His name: Offerings (declaring dependence upon God)

These gifts supply a sweet smelling aroma: well pleasing to God

The aroma is acknowledge for: as fruit that abounds to a Heavenly account.

A declared promise to the empty vessel.

Vs. 19: see: Luke 6:38: Give and it will be given…how?

And my God

Shall supply

All your need: empty vessel

According to: this is a staggering measure

His riches: flowing over

In glory

By Christ Jesus.

And the God of Peace,
Salvation and redemption bring three aspects of peace:
• Peace from God: it is a gift
• Peace with God: is the relationship we have because of the finished work of Christ
• Peace of God: it is a piece beyond our power, thinking, complete peace.
That is why it says ‘surpasses’: extra extraordinary peace! That’s surpasses understanding!
Which surpasses all understanding,


an undisturbed serenity, infinitely calm. One can only know it through spiritual experience. It surpasses all, all understanding.

Excel, beyond, superior:

Embracing what excels, reorders life, brings peace, and manifests a Kingdom ethic that testifies to the gospel’s transformative power.

Isaiah 26: The Stayed Mind

This term ‘guard' is one of strength found in a military battlement.

Like a strong castle, fortified

A mind stayed is a mind not strayed.

A mind stayed is a mind not frayed

Keep…. Your mind….stayed. Otherwise you’ll lose your mind: equaling no peace.

The Heart:

The whole interior life—thinking, feeling, choosing—into a single term that Scripture repeatedly declares must be transformed by grace. God searches it, the gospel renews it, the Spirit indwells it, and the believer is called to guard it until Christ is fully formed within.

Interesting note: from verse 4:6 to 4:9, Paul moves from an anxious fixations to Christ centered stability.

The several uses of this word is like a thread that weaves together divine character into Christian conduct and a community living witness.
And if there is anything praiseworthy
Worthy of accommodation
Praise, approval, that which is fitting because it’s approved by God.
Meditate on these things: Think on these things!
The Christian walk, the Christian life are all formed in the mind.
