Havner drew this truth from the account of Zacharias and Elisabeth in Luke 1. They had prayed for a child, but they had grown old without receiving one. Nevertheless, Zacharias remained faithful in his priestly service, continuing to serve God when he could not see what God was doing.

While Zacharias was burning incense in the Temple, an angel announced that his prayer had been heard and that Elisabeth would bear a son. Zacharias struggled to believe the angel’s message and was unable to speak until God’s word was fulfilled. Yet God remained faithful even when Zacharias faltered.

After the child was born, others expected him to be named after his father. However, Zacharias submitted to God’s revealed will and wrote:

“His name is John.” — Luke 1:63

The Bible then declares:

“And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, and praised God.” — Luke 1:64

Faithfulness keeps us serving while we wait; obedience places God’s will above our own expectations. When Zacharias honored God’s Word and confirmed the name God had chosen, his silence was turned into praise, and his testimony became a message.

Do not abandon your place of prayer or service merely because the answer has been delayed. Remain faithful when you cannot see what God is doing, and obey Him when His direction becomes clear. God has not forgotten your prayers, and His timing is always right. When we put Him first, He gives us something worth saying!

His Condition — He was religious but still lost

II. “Some Man” — The Soulwinner - Acts 8:31

Following the Spirit brought him to the right person - Acts 8:26–29

Familiarity with the Scriptures gave him the right power - Acts 8:30–35

Faithfulness to Share Christ gained the right profession - Acts 8:35–37

III. “Some Other Man” — The Saviour - Acts 8:34

Christ’s Submission — Isaiah 53:2

Christ’s Sufferings — Isaiah 53:3–5

Christ’s Substitution — Isaiah 53:4–6

Christ’s Silence — Isaiah 53:7

Christ’s Sacrificial Death — Isaiah 53:8

Christ’s Sinlessness — Isaiah 53:9

Christ’s Success — Isaiah 53:10–12

Summary: The sinner needed guidance, the soulwinner faithfully used the Scriptures, and the Saviour was the subject of the message.

The Holy Spirit brought them together so that Philip could preach Jesus unto him.

Before Billy Sunday became one of America’s best-known evangelists, he was a professional baseball player. While walking the streets of Chicago, he heard a gospel team singing and preaching outside the Pacific Garden Mission. The familiar hymns reminded him of his mother, and he followed them into the mission. There, Sunday heard the Gospel, trusted Christ as his Saviour, and began a transformed life that eventually led him from the baseball field to the evangelistic platform.

His testimony reminds us why the church must faithfully take the Gospel to those who need Christ. When Christians go, sinners hear—and God can completely transform a life!

“How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?”

A church cannot remain spiritually healthy while neglecting the Great Commission. Evangelism keeps our hearts focused on souls, our message centered on the Gospel, and our church actively reaching a lost world. We must never become content merely to gather—we have been commanded to go!
