This Sunday we begin a series on the Psalms. We begin in Psalm 1 where the living God invites us into a relationship with Himself that is pictured as – “The Blessed one is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever they do prospers” (!:3). This is where I want to live. This is the picture of our church, that not only delights my soul, but our Father’s as well. Welcome to the garden!

Psalm 1
Blessed is the one whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night (Psalm 1:1, 2).

The Hebrew word for meditate is hagah and means to give attention toward something or someone you care for. The object one gives attention to is key. In our verse, it is the “law of the Lord” that the person “delights” in. To meditate is not simply day dreaming; it can involve imagining, planning, conversing, even studying.

John 3:1-16
Nicodemus came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with him”
(John 3:1).

The story of Nicodemus reveals a critical difference between “knowing” and “being born.” What is the difference? Knowing has to do with intellectual understanding, or epistemology (how we know); birth has to do with being, or ontology (the nature of being), as in “I Am,” how God describes Himself. Ontology is reality, such as a living person; epistemology is our knowledge of that reality, or of a person. There is a massive difference when it comes to the Christian life. In Jesus’ words, “Nicodemus, your knowledge is not enough; you must be born again, become a new creation, a radically different person that God gives birth to in Christ!

Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord (Romans 12:11).

How we approach life as followers of Christ is important. The word “zeal” is akin to a pot of boiling water. Our attitude and behavior toward doing good and loving others is to be on high heat, actually boiling over. Never be lacking in zeal!

Isaiah 54:10
“Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken, nor my covenant of peace be removed,” says the Lord, who has compassion on you (Isaiah 54:10).

Unfailing love and God’s covenant of peace remain steady and endless. The chaos of the world, nature, and life itself will not derail God’s love for you and me.

The Summer of Agape Love 2026 comes to an end this Sunday. Our loving does not! What have we learned this summer about agape love? That God IS agape love. That He pours it into our lives through His Holy Spirit. That it is the greatest aspect of life. And that we are to love one another as we love ourselves. Love is not a word to be dissected but the life force to be cultivated, lived, and shared. And the God of love is the source of our love. Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His love endures forever! The beautiful story of love continues…

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His love endures forever (Psalm 136:1).
We praise God because His character is inherently good and His covenant love (hesed) never stops, fails, or runs out. This single verse is worthy of our full attention, pondering, exploring, and digesting, for it contains two foundational, eternal realities of life: goodness and love.

Love is a binding material. I’ve said it once, I’ll say it again: Parker Palmer’s statement, “Agape love is the connective tissue of reality.” Colossians 3:14 says, “Agape love binds everything together in perfect harmony!” Love is the binding material of the good life, creating and establishing beauty, wonder, delight, and pleasure in human beings. Genesis 22:1-14
After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” He said, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you” (Genesis 22:1-2).

It’s hard for me to imagine being told something by the God I love and follow with such horrific consequences. Can you imagine being told this information and traveling night and day with this knowledge? A trip lasting three days, three days of internal questioning, struggling, not knowing how to deal with the thought of killing your only son! I’m sure Abraham would have given himself in a heartbeat. Oh, that’s what God did for us!

Our passages this week reveal a stark contrast between the “good life” and the “bad life.” On occasion it is healthy to recognize this contrast and strengthen our resolve for the “good.” One interesting example is found in the world of contemporary music. We begin with the good. Our message and upcoming fall series, titled My Soul Sings, are drawn from a contemporary Christian band, Delirious’ final concert in London in 2009, where they closed with this song. The heart of the song is the ineffable, when the glory of life transcends the ability and power of words to capture it. This is when – My Soul Sings!

Psalm 36:1-9
For with you is the fountain of life; in your light do we see light (Psalm 36:9).

In this Psalm, as in many others, we have the contrast between “the wicked” (vr. 1) and “the good” (vr. 7-9). Unfortunately, this is the world we live in. How simple yet profound are the two statements we find in verse 9 – “For with you is the fountain of life.” Once again we find God-life as a never-ending flow of crystal-clear water giving refreshment, cleansing, and delight. The second is, “In your light do we see light.” What we give our focal attention to in this world is important. May we gaze upon the good and beautiful.
