"I care about you. Just stay away from me."

It's easy to love people in the abstract. Paul wants us to see what love actually looks like: faithful, wanting others to thrive and be blessed, not envying what God gave them. Jesus goes a step further and says lust, hatred, and covetousness in the heart mean we aren't loving our neighbor.

From Romans 13:8-14. Join us Sundays at 10:45 AM, 2417 FM 513, Campbell, TX 75422. https://link.content360.io/PVC

If you wouldn't do it with Jesus sitting next to you, don't do it.

Darkness and light do not coexist, and Jesus wants to dispel the darkness. That's what Paul means when he says to put on Christ in Romans 13.

Nobody sins in a vacuum.

Drunkenness, sexual sin, quarreling, and jealousy never stay contained. Romans 13:8-14 makes the case that every one of them reaches the people around us, whether we see it or not.

Finishing well does not mean being perfect.

Peter denied Christ, and he finished well. Paul persecuted Christians, and he finished well. Finishing well means keeping our eyes on Jesus, living for his glory, and loving one another, and the promise is an unfading crown of glory.

Are you serving because you have to, or because you want to?

Not out of compulsion but willingly, not for greed or money but eagerly. Don't be tempted by power, money, influence, being needed, or being right. Look for chances to pour yourself out on the flock God has given you.

How do church leaders protect the flock?

From 1 Peter 5:8-9: be sober-minded and alert. Shepherds protect God's people from false doctrine and from the devil, hold them accountable, and feed them the truth of the gospel and Scripture without compromise.

What did Peter learn from Jesus' towel?

The man who wrote 1 Peter once had Jesus kneel and wash his feet. He fought it, but he learned humility, and he learned leadership from that towel.

You can't give what you don't have.

The first thing a leader needs is a deep and growing relationship with Jesus. Then, when you are squeezed and asked, you have something to pour out on others. Be an example, be diligent in seeking his kingdom, and lead with love.

Is being an elder a promotion?

Peter watched Christ suffer, and he knew that eldership is not a way out of suffering. It is a call to die to self for the people we lead. Shepherding means sacrifice, and sacrifice means suffering.
