What if the people who annoy you most are the exact "body parts" you need to grow? Is it possible to live in unity with someone you disagree with on almost everything? Are there ways forward through painful individual or communal conflict? Paul’s letters in the New Testament offer a treasure trove of wisdom, instruction, and vision on how to navigate real-world conflict, get along with difficult people, hold space for one another's differences, and practice barrier-breaking love.

Sunday Morning Scripture Discussion

Adult Formation Class will take a deeper dive into the Old Testament lectionary passage. Class will meet in the Library this Sunday and moving forward from 10:00 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. Parishioner and teacher Rebekah Martin-Fong will come prepared with a brief overview to generate conversation. Dear Beloved of St. Martin’s,

When The Rev. John McCard, your previous rector, was finishing his fifteen year tenure at St. Martin’s, I was serving as Vicar of Church of the Common Ground. CCG is a downtown church, outside, for people who live outside. This Sunday, as we continue to celebrate our 75th anniversary at St. Martin’s, Fr. John will preach at 10:00 a.m. here at St. Martin’s, and we will feast and fellowship. And then many of us will head down to worship (again) at CCG, leaving noonish for the 1:00 p.m. service outdoors by the fountain in Woodruff Park (note it's DragonCon this weekend - at least one family from St. Martin's will be there in costume). We will bring the sandwiches we will all make during our lunch on this ONE St. Martin’s gathering on September 6. The epistle on Sunday will remind us of Jesus’ teaching, “love your neighbor as yourself” and we will attempt to do just that. Thank you to the Outreach Commission for facilitating our meal and this opportunity to serve. And, thank you to Deacon Victoria, celebrating her five year anniversary with us this month, for spearheading the effort.

On Sunday you can also save a stamp and pick up the stewardship letter and pledge card addressed to you by Sam Baroody, chair of stewardship, and Kathy Evenson, co-chair, with me. We welcome you to think now about the gifts you will offer in 2027 because pledges help us responsibly work through our budgeting process this fall. I’m excited about this year’s stewardship campaign: A Tapestry of Gifts - Weaving Together Time, Talent, Treasure. Each of us have a variety of gifts to offer, and we invite you to prayerfully consider pledging your time & talent alongside pledging treasure to support the ministries of St. Martin’s. As you can see in this e-news, there are so many ministries to participate in - I hope you will find something that will help you to love your neighbor as yourself!

Pastoral Care Spotlight:

Susan and Ned Breunig

This month, we're delighted to shine our Pastoral Care Spotlight on Susan and Ned Breunig, two of St. Martin’s faithful Eucharistic Visitors.

Susan is active in Women’s Bible Study and St. Monica’s Guild, while Ned participates in Men’s Bible Study. Together, they have also helped organize St. Martin’s Habitat for Humanity projects and spearheaded our Capital Campaign, just two more examples of the many ways they have shared their time and talents with our parish.



When they are not serving and connecting with others at St. Martin’s, they pursue interests that take them in very different directions: Susan is an avid birder, keeping her eyes on the skies, while Ned is a scuba diver, exploring what lies beneath the waves.

We are grateful for the warmth, generosity, and faithful presence Susan and Ned bring to our Eucharistic Visitor ministry and to the life of St. Martin’s.

Dear Beloved of St. Martin’s,
Last thursday was the feast of St. Monica. I remembered only because one of you sent me a note with the things the Catholic Church says about Monica being the patron saint of homemakers, married women, mothers, and victims of verbal abuse or difficult marriages. My Catholic grandmother used to send me a note on a different date annually - perhaps she followed a different hagiography - and would remind me that Monica was a wise woman who prayed. I’ve always tried to emulate my namesake in that way.
Monica is famous for persevering in prayer for her pagan husband and for her once-wayward son, Augustine, whose feast day is today. If there’s a takeaway here, it’s that prayer is important. There’s so much to read in the e-news, but when you get to the bottom, note the lengthy prayer list. Say your prayers. Add others. Let us know if we can join you in holding up your additions (always at [email protected]). And remember that the Book of Common Prayer offers a wealth of resources. One of Augustine’s famous prayers features in our BCP compline service:

Keep watch, dear Lord, with those who work, or watch, or weep this night, and give your angels charge over those who sleep. Tend the sick, Lord Christ; give rest to the weary, bless the dying, soothe the suffering, pity the afflicted, shield the joyous; and all for your love’s sake. Amen.

An Odyssey through the Odyssey

with Man Martin

Join award-winning novelist Man Martin for a lively three-evening journey into Homer’s Odyssey, one of the foundational works of Western literature and a story that still feels surprisingly alive nearly three thousand years later.

Designed for a general audience, this engaging series will explore myth, storytelling, and the enduring power of Homer’s epic. Together, we will encounter gods, monsters, shipwrecks, disguises, ghosts, and the complicated hero Odysseus, while considering what the poem has to say about home, identity, loyalty, hospitality, and what it means to be human.

The series will meet on September 17, September 24, and October 1. The cost is $30, with w**e and cheese provided.
