MONDAY HOPE 🤍 I AM A GRIEVING PARENT

I don’t want to be called a loss parent.

Because I am tired of losing.

I lost the future I imagined.
I lost the milestones I was supposed to witness.
I lost the first steps, the first words, the birthdays, the ordinary Tuesdays.
I lost the chance to watch my child grow.

But I did not lose my child.

My child’s life did not end when their earthly life ended.
Their story did not end at the graveside.
And my motherhood or fatherhood did not end there either.

I am a grieving parent.

I grieve because I love.
I grieve because my child matters.
I grieve because the bond between parent and child is not erased by death.

And I grieve in hope.

The hope of our Catholic faith tells me that death is not the final word. Christ has conquered death. Heaven is real. And my child is held in the love of God.

Perhaps one day, by God’s grace, I will look back and realize that what felt like the greatest loss was also the beginning of a deeper hope.

I can miss my child terribly and still have hope.

I can cry and still believe.

I can ache for their presence and still rejoice that they are with Jesus.

And I can call my child what they truly are:

a beloved child of God,a child who has gained Heaven, and perhaps even a little saint interceding for me.

So today, I won’t define myself by what I have lost.

I will allow myself to be a grieving parent—a parent who carries love, carries sorrow, and carries hope.

Because I am still my child’s parent.

And one day, I pray, grief will give way to the joy of reunion.

Until then, I will grieve in hope. 🕊️🤍

“We do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, about those who are asleep, so that you may not grieve like the rest, who have no hope.” — 1 Thessalonians 4:13

On this Labor Day, here are some September saints that have a lot to say about "work."

"Love acts."
On September 3rd we celebrated St. Gregory the Great, the pope who saw an intrinsic connection between our work and our devotion to God. He said, “The proof of love is in the works. Where love exists, it works great things. But when it ceases to act, it ceases to exist.”

"Effort counts."
On September 5th we celebrated St. Theresa (Mother Theresa), who famously said, “Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.” She even provided a way to check our work: “The miracle is not that we do the work, but that we are happy to do it,” she said.

"Work speaks."
On September 9th St. Peter Claver said "it is your work, not your words, that reveal your heart. We must speak to them with our hands before we try to speak to them with our lips.”

"Work serves."
The September 13th saint, John Chrysostom, saw the same lesson in the animal kingdom. “The bee is more honored than other animals not because she labors, but because she labors for others,” he said.

"God works."
St. Matthew, whose feast is September 21st, is the only evangelist to share Jesus’s Parable of the Laborers, who found difficulty in the way they were paid for their work. But the moral of the story was that God gives us everything, always. We owe more to his generosity than our industry.

"Sacrifice pays."
Padre Pio (September 23rd) asks, “You complain because the same trials are constantly returning. But look here, what have you to fear? Are you afraid of the divine craftsman who wants to perfect His masterpiece in this way? Would you like to come from the hands of such a magnificent Artist as a mere sketch and no more?”

"God perfects."
St. Vincent de Paul, who we celebrate on September 27th, "No matter what we do," he said, “We have all been called by God to work on a masterpiece.”

What work or rest is God calling you to in this season?
