Two announcements:
1. As we go through the Gifts of the Holy Spirit and the Virtues, we may find ourselves overwhelmed. For some, these reflections may sound foreign or a bit "heady". As I am also learning, this is to be expected. We may not be accustomed to viewing our faith in this manner. As each virtue and gift comes into focus, the pieces will come together. Through these reflections, we get a glimpse of just how active the Holy Spirit is. He's inviting us to be transformed, heart, mind, body, and soul, into living images of God.

2. Part 1 of Prudence and the Gift of Counsel has been added to the website. You can see it here https://files.ecatholic.com/25748/documents/2026/5/Virtue-%20Being%20Made%20Perfect%20in%20Christ-%20Virtue%20of%20Prudence%20and%20the%20Gift%20of%20Counsel%20Part%201%20May%2031%202026.pdf?t=1780278299000

Catechist Corner

Our series on virtues will include the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Each reflection will be two parts: the virtue first, then the gift attached to it.

I’ve also added some questions in various places to allow the material to sink in.

We’ll cover the cardinal virtues, starting with prudence and working through the remaining three. Then at last, we can jump into the theological virtues.

The material is organized around the following….

What does each virtue do, and how do we use it?

Recognizing our cooperative role with God’s grace.

Appreciating our dependence on grace and the Holy Spirit - it’s not a one-man show.

What are some challenges to growing in virtue with the Holy Spirit?

My hope is that these reflections touch your heart, mind, and soul. The Gift of Counsel will be out on the first Sunday of June.

Virtue and the gifts of the Holy Spirit are meant to draw us into a deeper union with God and each other. With Pentecost this past Sunday, I thought it wise to include the gifts of the Holy Spirit with the virtues. Prudence is the primary moral virtue to be developed with the assistance of the Holy Spirit's counsel and guidance. The reflection will be in Sunday's bulletin.

Our sweet 2nd graders received the Blessed Sacrament for the first time this past April on Divine Mercy weekend. May they always yearn to be close to Christ in the Eucharist!

Catechist Corner Q&A

Question: What does infused virtue mean, and why is that important?

Answer: First, the word infused implies being filled or saturated with something. Take a rock and put it in water. The rock is surrounded by water, but dry on the inside. Now do the same with a sponge. You'll notice the water has filled every space inside the sponge and is now saturated or "infused" with water. So infused virtue is poured into the mind, heart, and will and fills it.

Secondly, in terms of virtues, this refers to an action of God's grace infusing or filling the soul. Infusion is not brought about by human effort, but is a free act of God. Normally, infused virtues are listed as "theological" (think faith, hope, charity).

Lastly, why is that important? The fact that we can and should ask God for that gift is proof of His love and concern for us. Infusion is more than an action; it's an encounter with the living God who shares and gives His life to you. Remember Jesus, true man and true God. Infused virtue is God guiding us; natural virtue or habit is our cooperation with His grace.

Continuing our reflection on Being Made Perfect in Christ, by delving into the Cardinal Virtues. Do we see virtues and the gifts of the Holy Spirit as a list of moral propositions or as a process and reflection of Our Lord? The intent of this series is to present the virtues (both theological and cardinal) with the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. The hope is to gain a better understanding of ourselves and life in union with God.
