PASTOR DON’S THOUGHT OF THE DAY
In the 1840s, a brilliant Danish thinker named Søren Kierkegaard warned that the rise of the newspaper would create crowds without community—people surrounded by chatter yet starved of genuine encounter. He could not have imagined our glowing screens, but he named our ache nearly two centuries early.
So, who was Søren Kierkegaard? He was a Danish philosopher (1813-1855) known as the father of existentialism. His work spanned philosophy, theology, and psychology.
What he had to say about "the rise of crowds without community", was so, so, so prophetic. What I mean is, everyday we sit at a banquet table heaped with updates, posts, and reactions, and we rise from it hungry. Likes are calories with no nourishment. Jesus knew the difference. He had crowds—thousands following Him—but He poured Himself into twelve, and He called them friends: "I do not call you servants any longer... but I have called you friends" (John 15:15). The Savior of the world chose the small table over the large crowd.
Today, consider where you are settling for the banquet of noise when God is inviting you to the table of friendship. Show up. Be present. Let yourself be fed.
