Billy Graham’s mission report on Nagaland. No doubt Nagaland had the finest preachers and missionaries who presented the Full Gospel with their rich cultural intelligence!

"AN OBSERVATION OF THE RESPONSE OF THE CHURCH TO COVID-19"

The current global crisis due to the Coronavirus has elicited various responses from different people groups and I have observed an intriguing phenomenon that pertains to our response and behavior. I believe this is a significant aspect we need to address because as Christians, we are called to uplift and encourage one another, as opposed to condemning or competing in these dire times.

Life in North America, Europe, China, Italy, Iran, South Korea, Middle East, etc. has come to a standstill. Social isolation and distancing are encouraged. Churches and seminaries, schools and colleges, hostels and gathering places have been closed. Here inNorth America, we are experiencing lockdown and people are all leaving the universities and going home. Caution is key and people are being so extremely careful. This isn’t because people here are scared or lack faith. Rather, it is a precaution taken as God has given us the responsibility of taking care of ourselves and our neighbors. Just because you or I have a strong immune system does not mean the old or young person next to us possesses the same immunity. Even if we survive the onslaught of the virus, what guarantee do we have that we won't be carriers? Or that those we infect will make it alive? We cannot be selfish and only think about ourselves but act responsibly towards other's safety as well.

Many countries in the global south are yet to grasp the gravity of the situation. I was astounded to see posts on social media claiming that if they were given the chance, they would go and lay hands on the Coronavirus-stricken victims for healing and visit all the quarantined places for healing, instead of closing the church. I completely understand where this is coming from because I too have experienced miraculous healings firsthand - both in my life and in the lives of others during ministry (I have witnessed lame men walking and blind eyes seeing and so on). But I believe it is unfair to demean other peoples' faith when one has not experienced the same scale of loss and grief. One of the hyper charismatic centers in the world where most charismatic and faith-healing ministry draws their source from- the Bethel School of Supernatural Ministry at California, USA, has shut down their healing room/center due to the virus. Why? It isn’t because they do not experience healing, because we know they do! But they are being sensitive to the environment they live in. The situation is very serious.

The Word of God instructs us not to judge one another (Matthew 7:1). I believe the 'holier than thou' attitude needs to be dropped. We are all in this together. We are all suffering together. It is time to unite more than ever; to fight against this disease. Suffering is a part of the Christian life. The problem of pain and theodicy is something the Church has wrestled throughout history, and it is inevitable. We do not have all the answers for the pain and suffering in the world, but we do know why our Lord Jesus Christ came to suffer in this world. Our Lord Jesus suffered for our sins and to give us eternal life; Paul suffered for his faith. Ecclesiastes 3 tells us that there is a time for everything. Even though it is now time when the world suffers as a whole, we can trust God and rise above the suffering; He comforts us while we mourn (Matthew 5:4); even in our suffering, we have peace, because He has overcome the world! (John 16:33).

It is already disheartening to witness racism in many places as people dub the disease 'the Chinese virus' or 'the Asian virus.' It is an enigma that we are appropriating blame instead of spending every available resource and time to find a cure or stop the spread of the virus. Add to this mix, our own Christian brothers and sisters disregarding and taking digs at each other’s' faith and we might as well lose all hope. Trust me, I am sandwiched between both worlds and have experienced both sides. It is wonderful to have faith - even one as small as a mustard seed can move mountains, right? So, what's a petty virus in comparison? - but faith and arrogance do not make a good pair. Using precautions to preserve the safety of ourselves and others is not only an appeal but a duty as well. Healing, signs, and wonders should only humble us and not make us ignorant.

When the Israelites were en route to the Promised Land, they received manna from heaven, but when they conquered Canaan, they had to till the land for bread and grow vineyards. They ate the produce of their hard work. Why did God not provide them manna forever? God wanted them to live responsible and accountable lives. Are we doing the same today?

God has given the church the role of a shepherd for the people. The shepherd holds a rod and a staff. The rod is for attacking the enemy and chastising the wrong, while the staff is to lead with wisdom and discernment. Are we utilizing all the functions allotted to us? James 2:17 warns us that "faith without works is dead." Let us utilize an equal measure of both faith and work, and triumph over this crisis in Jesus name! Amen!

In Christ,
Husezo Rhakho

Finally, the novel Coronavirus that had got everyone on red alert has come to an end! The cure has been found and many people are restored. People are coming back to their normal lives. Schools, universities and working places have begun to function normally again. The travel agencies have started.

I had seen through the chaos and suffering, the fear and confusion...I saw an alternate explanation for this sudden madness. I saw a honeycomb filled with honey within the carcass of a lion. I saw the empty tomb after the agony of the crucifixion. I saw the crown of everlasting life on a perfect head which was beheaded on earth...

The fear of impending doom and inevitable death had awakened many from slumber. Life seemed more precious than ever. And in the midst of the storm, there was a lone figure right in the middle of the swirling waves, beckoning us and calming us down...

Now I see revival breaking out in the US and many believers have started to take prayer more seriously.. I see China experiencing the power of miraculous healing as they turn to the One True God.. I see many people in Iran, Europe, putting their faith in a greater power than the weapons of war.. There are countless of testimonies of divine healing, miracles, in the whole world. Christians are flocking all over the globe, especially in the most hard-hit areas for relief and evangelism.

Atheists have begun to question themselves, agnostics have begun to read the Bible and nominal Christians have begun to hope and pray for miracles. Families have been restored. Angels begin to appear in the sky, trumpets begin to sound throughout the earth..old people begin to dream, young people, begin to see visions.. and all people on earth begin to search their hearts...the whole universe trembles in anticipation for the Risen King Jesus to conquer and reign forever... we are not afraid... we will welcome him... "I am coming soon," I hear distinctly...These are the days of Elijah! We are witnessing a major revival throughout the world, every knees and tongue are bowing down before the King of Kings Jesus Christ.

I wake up with a start! Was it all a dream, after all? It seemed so real. I am shaken but feel at peace within. peacefully shaken, what an hour for oxymorons! I'm awake now.. I find tears in my eyes but feel blissfully happy at once. It's still dark outside. I praise the Lord and lie back down to sleep..safe under his feathers..I hear the wind..it sounds like my Saviour... "I am coming soon"...Amen! Come, Lord Jesus.

Over the past few days, I have been hearing a lot about the Graham Staines biopic - The Least of These (A biography of a missionary from Australia to India who was burned alive along with two of his sons). This is a short abstract of the movie through the eyes of my friend who watched it recently in India.

The best thing about the film is that it does not follow an in-your-face tactic of forcing an opinion on the audience. We are given ample space to form our own opinion as we follow the journalist through his quest to find fault with Dr. Graham. It portrays the divine love which Graham and Gladys had for uplifting the poor, oppressed and those shunned by society due to leprosy. We can see how people respect and love him because there is no-one who treats them with this much compassion and perseverance. His humanitarian work which reflects the love of God is what converts people; even those who do not convert are welcome and cared for.

This strikes the perfect balance because India is a secular country and all religion are to be tolerated, according to the constitution. However, there is gross misunderstanding and misplaced belief which leads to the ultimate murder of Graham and his two young sons. The fact that Gladys (wife of the missionary) can even forgive the killers of her husband and sons is the strongest testimony of the faith and commitment she and her husband had to God. It was such a joy to watch such wonderful re-enactments of true events and to hear such a simple yet powerful script, which never got preachy. The Staines' family were the story...their lives were the testimony and their choices were the sermon. We were all immensely blessed!

A must-watch for all Christians and anyone who believes in doing something good for others during this life.

"A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this, all people will know that you are my disciples if you have love for one another." (John 13: 34-25)

Edward Winter Clark inquired and expressed his desire when he was in Assam, India, to the Assamese Christians, how he longed to bear the message to those distant wilds (hills of the Nagas). They shook their heads doubtfully and said, “They are savages, sahib, village warring with village, constantly cutting off heads to get skulls.” Marry Clark recalls her husband replying determinately:

“The voice of my departed Lord,
“Go teach all nations”
Comes on the night air and awakes my ear,
And I will go.”
