Our saint for the day is Marina the Monk. Yes, you read that correctly. Born in what is now known as Lebanon, Marina became Marinos and joined their father in a monastery where they lived together until their father passed. One day, an inn keeper's daughter accused Marinos of fathering her child. The abbot, incensed, cast Marinos out and later insisted they care for the child. Marinos accepted the punishment, and raised the child as their own. Marinos and child were allowed back into the monastery, but Marinos faced heavy chores. Accepting them gladly, Marinos worked until they died at age forty. While preparing the body for burial, the abbot and all the monks wept from shame when they realized that Marinos was female and could not have committed the crime they had been punished so harshly for.
