Founded in 1959, RRUUC is a religious community of over 600 adult members and 280 children, serving people living in MD, VA and DC. Our vision: to grow and deepen in Community, Spirit and Service for all ages. Community draws us into deeper relationship to our congregational community and the world, so that we might choose connection over isolation. Spiritual growth draws us into deeper relationsh

Each year, we gather for one of Unitarian Universalism’s most beloved rituals: Flower Communion, in which every person brings a flower and leaves with someone else’s, a simple and profound reminder that we are richer together than apart. This shortened service celebrates the unique beauty each of us contributes to this community, and the new bouquet we become when we share our gifts.

Throughout human history, we have marked all manner of important moments in our lives with shared ritual. We celebrate births, honor achievements, memorialize our dead. Yet there remain pivotal occasions for which we just don’t have any regular custom of collective observance—these often go unrecognized and unnamed. This Sunday, we gather specifically to bless our 5th and 8th graders as they “move up” to the next stages of their education and growth; and with intention, we reflect on and create ritual space for various other milestones and transitions that occur in the breadth of human experience.

We drape the holiday in celebration, but at its heart, it is about cost — about what has been surrendered, and whether we have honored that surrender faithfully. Join us for FLOW tomorrow (Wed., May 15), 6:30-8pm. In March, we engaged with lectio divina in its own right. This month we revisit “Divine Encounter” with a focus on visio divina, or sacred seeing. Though helpful, no prior experience is required for this hybrid in-person/Zoom session, as we will spend some time (re-)familiarizing ourselves with the steps involved in the practice.
