Proverbs 11:12 sets before us the difference between a vain and foolish heart and one that is taught by wisdom from above. He that lacketh wisdom is soon stirred up to despise his neighbor, to speak unadvisedly with his lips, and to sow discord. But a man of understanding is not hasty in spirit, nor eager to answer every matter, but rather holdeth his peace.

This scripture reminds us that true grace is often seen as much in what a man refraineth from saying as in what he speaketh. A quiet spirit, a forbearing tongue, and a heart disposed unto peace are precious fruits of the Lord’s working. When the Lord is pleased to give wisdom, He likewise giveth humility, patience, and charity toward others. May He teach us to walk carefully, to be slow to wrath, and to conduct ourselves in such a way that our words and our demeanor might honor Christ and show kindness toward our fellow man.

This is a needed reminder in a day of social media, political division, and constant argument. The world encourages outrage and strife, but God’s people are called to wisdom, peace, and charity. There should not be fighting among Christians. May the Lord help us to guard our words, hold our peace, and treat one another in a way that honors Christ.

Proverbs 4 is a father’s loving instruction to pursue wisdom above everything else.

It teaches us to listen to godly counsel, stay on the path of righteousness, avoid the way of evil, guard our hearts, watch our words, and keep our eyes fixed on what is right.

The chapter reminds us that wisdom brings direction, protection, and life when we walk closely with the Lord.
