What kind of tomatoes will I grow this year?
We’ve been nurturing ten favorite, diverse tomatoes for you - to go on sale at the Not Always Annual Plant Sale at Second Congregational Church on Saturday, May 16th from 9 AM to 2 PM.
How do you choose? For those of us with a sweet tooth and like to go to our garden to snack, SUNGOLD are our favorites. These 1-inch treats resemble a certain potato chip. You can’t stop at one. They are so prolific you don’t need to worry! Last year we discovered their new cousin, PINK PRINCESS. You can start drinking in its fine wine flavor early in August. Some folks call it “Pink Champagne,” and their rich flavors deserve that name.
At about 2” tall JULIET is our dream plum tomato. Sweet, meaty, tangy, they make a wonderful salad, are great for stewing, and hold on the vine up to 2 weeks. Crack resistant, they fight off slugs and bugs and disease as well.
For full-sized organic heirlooms we love CHEROKEE PURPLE tomatoes. This flavorful fruit originated with indigenous farmers and continues to thrill us today. Early for its size, PRUDEN’S PURPLE makes a heavenly sandwich tomato with a rich tomato taste nicely balancing tartness with sweet undertones. Productive and disease resistant it’s a winner.
Coming from Krymsk on the Black Sea the juicy yet meaty BLACK KRIM tomato is reported by one fan as offering, “a smoky flavor like a good single malt scotch.” It reminds us why we grow our own tomatoes.
CLOUDY DAY was cultivated to grow in places with less sunlight, and bears a medium-sized fruit.
BLACK BRANDYWINE is big and beautiful, the first to set the pace for heirloom tomatoes with its lovely mix of sugars and acids.
We grew BEST BOY for your beefsteak tomato. Then last, but largest, the SUPER BEEFSTEAK weighs in at an average of 2 lb. per fruit. This hybrid provides the original "beefsteak" flavor and meaty texture.
Come early for your best selection of about 3,000 veggies and flowers of all types. Then know that whatever you spend or give empowers the work of Second Congregational Church, home of Sunday Suppers, 12 Step programs, and dozens of community groups.
