A 501(c)(3) that provides free, expert legal aid to immigrants seeking humanitarian-based visas.

WHO ARE OUR NEIGHBORS?

• A young couple fleeing violence and political upheaval
• An abused woman whose husband, a U.S. citizen, threatens with deportation and separation from her children
• A father seeking to bring his wife and children out of a drought-stricken country
• An unaccompanied minor who “aged-out” of the system before receiving a decision on her case
• A disillusioned man whose hard-earned money has gone to pay for faulty legal advice from those who take advantage of immigrants
• Victims of human trafficking

WHAT OUR VOLUNTEERS DO
Intake workers are the clients' first contact and gather the necessary information to determine the clients' situations
Interpreters assist with translation for those volunteers and clients who need help communicating
Volunteer attorneys receive training in immigration law and do initial assessments as well as follow-up visits with clients
Hospitality workers help with refreshments, provide child care, and greet clients
Case managers review files, make telephone calls, and collect documents to prepare cases for review by the supervising attorney.

On Thursday, November 5th, the Asian Law Caucus, Asian Americans Advancing Justice-Atlanta, Defend Migrants Alliance, and Tanggol Migrante will host a “Know Your Rights at the Airport” Training.

They will provide information regarding travelers' rights when responding to searches, questioning, and detention at airports based on immigration status. Learn best practices regarding how to protect yourself and your devices, and get up to date information regarding recent trends in inspection and detention at U.S. ports of entry.

Their legal team will cover:

· How to Prepare for Air Travel
· Your Rights in Airports
· What You Can Do If Someone You Care About Is Detained

Happy birthday to us! New England Justice for Our Neighbors is 14 years old.

We began as a mission of HopeGateWay church in Portland, ME and almost immediately opened our second clinic in Springfield, MA. Other clinics quickly followed in Woburn, Lawrence, Lowell, and Worcester. Early on, we became a part of the National Justice for Our Neighbors network (now the Immigration Law and Justice Network), and we received 501(c)(3) status in 2015. Since COVID, we have added additional programs and are now in the process of expanding our clinic program and establishing our volunteer attorney program. We currently offer in-person or remote services across all of Massachusetts (except the Cape and Islands).

Thank you to so many of you who have supported us in many ways along the journey. We look forward to celebrating our 15th with you next year!

Border Afterlives: Homicide by Policy

Dr. Gabriella Soto will review the cases of two recent immigrant deaths at the U.S. border. They were classified as homicides as they occurred as a result of the U.S. border enforcement strategy. However, thousands of similar cases have been classified as accidents. Dr. Soto will discuss the importance of reconceptualizing these deaths to accurately reflect reality. Community leaders, witnesses, and advocates will also speak about the need for change in immigration policymaking for the protection of immigrants’ rights and lives. Many Non-Citizen Immigrants Lost Medicaid Eligibility on October 1

As of October 1st, many immigrants have lost access to federal Medicaid and CHIP. Here’s what you need to know:

Those losing access include:
- Refugees, asylees, and people granted withholding of removal
- Domestic violence survivors who are self-petitioners under the VAWA act
- T Visa holders

States are in the process of implementing these new restrictions. Those who may be affected should expect to receive important notices or requests for information.

In Massachusetts, certain groups may still be able to receive healthcare through MassHealth Family Assistance, MassHealth Standard, state-funded Medicaid or CHIP, or the state-funded Children’s Medical Security Plan, including:

- Seniors and adults with disabilities who are PRUCOL or lawfully present
- Children under 21 who are lawfully present
- Children under 19
- Pregnant people
- Adults who are PRUCOL

If you lose access to Medicaid, other care options exist, such as:
- Federally Qualified Health Centers
- Hospital charity care and financial assistance programs
- Local public health programs

These Medicaid restrictions will make it more difficult for immigrants to receive preventive care, manage ongoing health conditions, and access treatment when needed. The changes could also place added pressure on health care providers and communities as more people delay care because of cost or lack of coverage. Families who may be affected should stay informed, pay attention to notices from state agencies, and seek trusted guidance before assuming they have lost coverage or have no other options.

Pathway to Hope’s federal funding ended in July. The 127 clients’ cases under this program are now supported entirely by fundraising. “Mariana” is one of these clients.

Currently a 20-year-old high school senior, Mariana made the dangerous journey from Guatemala to the United States by herself in 2024 at age 17. Abandoned by her father when she was 3 years old, she and her mother lived at a subsistence level, surviving on tortillas with salt after a spinal surgery left her mother disabled and unable to work.

Mariana became a client in our Pathway to Hope program shortly after her arrival, received her Special Immigrant Juvenile status this past October, and is now awaiting approval of her work authorization. Due to a long wait list, she will likely receive a visa in 2030. In the meantime, she is thriving in high school and hoping to become a criminologist.

Every immigrant deserves to be represented by a knowledgeable attorney - especially children. With our recent loss of federal funding, we are more reliant on donors like you to continue serving all of our existing clients and new ones, too.
