This anthem (the music before ”The Spirit of God”) was written by Evan Stephens for the dedication of the Salt Lake Temple in 1893. It’s not sung very often, usually only (if ever) by choirs at temple dedications; but it’s been going through my mind a lot lately and I think it’s breathtakingly beautiful, both in word and note:
Hosanna! Hosanna! Hosanna!
To God and the Lamb!
Amen, amen, amen.
The house of the Lord is completed!
The house of the Lord is completed!
May our offering by Him be accepted,
May our offering by Him be accepted!
Amen, amen.
Rejoice, o ye saints whose patient faith and labor
Have reared this house wherein today ye stand.
Rejoice ye blest departed saintly spirits
Behold your temple, finished, crowns the land.
Rejoice ye souls awaiting your redemption
The work speeds on to set the captive free!
Thanks be to God for his eternal mercies
Thanks be to God for endless liberty
Thanks be to God for endless liberty.
If you have recently liked this page not fully understanding what occurs at the Boston Massachusetts Temple but perhaps drawn to the page by the simple beauty of the building and the grounds…
THIS is why The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints builds and operates temples: to put the Atonement of Jesus Christ into daily practice and to set free the captive spirits described in First Peter.
I hope you can all find time soon to visit the Temple and participate in this great and essential work. God bless.
