One of the highlights of Shavuot is our Tikkun Leil Shavuot—an evening of learning, community, and (of course) plenty of cheesecake. A beloved part of the night is learning from members of our own community.

I don’t know if members of the Muslim community here in Bellingham, or beyond, will happen to read this. But after today’s horrific shooting at an Islamic center near San Diego, I simply want to say: our Jewish community grieves alongside you.

As spiritual cousins, we know all too well what it feels like when houses of worship become targets of hatred instead of sanctuaries of peace. No community should have to gather for prayer while wondering if they are safe.

My heart aches not only for those directly affected, but also for the larger reality we are living through; a society overflowing with anger, easy access to weapons, isolation, radicalization, and hatred. It is heartbreaking that young people can be pulled toward violence in this way.

At moments like this, I hope we choose something different. More compassion. More relationship. More courage to see one another as human beings created in the image of God.

We are holding the Muslim community in our hearts tonight.

Yom HaShoah Community Service – Monday, April 13 at 7:00pm

Join us tomorrow evening as we gather for our annual Yom HaShoah service, remembering the six million Jews murdered in the Holocaust, and honoring the lives, stories, and resilience of our people.

This year’s service will be led in large part by our 8th grade students, who have spent the past year studying the Shoah and reflecting deeply on what it means to remember. Through their voices—alongside music, poetry written by victims and survivors, and traditional prayers—we will move together through a powerful journey: from a world that once was, to what was taken, to what still lives, and what we carry forward.

All are welcome. Come be part of this meaningful evening of memory and community.
