A Historic Holy Place
The Sorrowful Mother Shrine is the oldest place of pilgrimage dedicated to the Blessed Mother in the Midwest and east of the Mississippi River in the United States. Francis de Sales Brunner, a missionary of the Most Precious Blood, and having a great devotion to Mary, built on this site a small red brick chapel in honor of the Sorrowful Mother. The Shrine quickly became a pla

ce where people could come and "stand still and feel the presence of God." Pilgrims came, and continue today, seeking physical healing and spiritual guidance, help and comfort, through her intercession. You who live and reign forever and ever.

The Catholic Ladies of Columbia #116 from St. Francis Xavier Parish and School in Willard spent a few hours at the Shrine today. The group attended the 11:00am Mass, enjoyed a golf cart tour of the grounds, visited the Gift Shop, and then gathered for lunch in the pilgrim center’s hall. We enjoy the group’s annual visit and look forward to their return.

Today we welcomed 34 pilgrims who are on day 2 of their 7 day journey from Maryland to Wisconsin. They are visiting five Marian Shrines throughout their travels. Their destination is the National Shrine of Our Lady of Champion located in Champion, Wisconsin. The group is from Saint Mary of the Assumption Parish in Upper Marlboro, Maryland and other nearby parishes. The group attended Mass, walked the grounds, enjoyed lunch, and spent some time in the Gift Shop. The rainy weather didn’t dampen their spirits one bit! We wish the pilgrims safe travels and are honored they selected the Sorrowful Mother Shrine as one of their stops along their way.
