New ACA Meeting Begins at St. Margaret's

St. Margaret's is pleased to announce a new Adult Children of Alcoholics and Dysfunctional Families (ACA) meeting beginning on Wednesdays at 6:00 PM.

ACA is a 12-Step recovery fellowship for individuals who grew up in homes affected by alcoholism, addiction, or other forms of family dysfunction. Through shared experience, mutual support, and personal growth, participants find healing, hope, and healthier ways of living.

This new group joins several other recovery and support groups that meet at St. Margaret's each week. We believe that recovery ministries are a vital part of our mission to serve our community. Whether someone is seeking freedom from addiction, support for mental health challenges, or healing from the effects of family dysfunction, we are committed to providing safe and welcoming spaces where people can find hope and connection.

All are welcome.

What a wonderful morning at St. Margaret’s!

Following worship, members of our El Salvador pilgrimage team shared stories and reflections from their recent journey during Lent. We were especially grateful to be joined via Zoom by friends from San Lucas in San Miguel, El Salvador, including their priest, as we celebrated the relationships and faith that continue to connect our communities.

A special thank you to the pilgrimage team for providing a beautiful coffee hour.

We give thanks for this growing partnership and for all the ways God is at work among us.

El Salvador Presentation

This Sunday (May 31) after the 10 AM Eucharist, the St. Margaret’s pilgrimage group to El Salvador will offer a special presentation to the parish in Lyle Hall.

Over coffee and refreshments, we will share stories, photos, reflections, and moments from our pilgrimage — the people we met, where we encountered hope, what challenged us, and how this experience is shaping our faith and life together at St. Margaret’s.

We may even have a few friends from El Salvador join us briefly by Zoom on the Smart TV.

All are invited to stay after church and be part of the conversation. We would love to share this experience with you.

Pride Sunday at St. Margaret’s – June 28

On Sunday, June 28, St. Margaret’s will celebrate Pride Sunday during the 10:00 AM Eucharist in connection with the Baton Rouge Pride Festival taking place downtown at the River Center on Saturday, June 27.

As part of the liturgy, we are honored to offer Our Wildest Imagining, a moving musical work by composer Dominick DiOrio created in honor of Bishop Gene Robinson, the first openly gay bishop in the Episcopal Church and in the worldwide Anglican Communion (2003). The piece weaves together words and reflections from Bishop Robinson’s life and ministry and celebrates God’s boundless love, dignity, and welcome for all people.

At St. Margaret’s, we give thanks for the diversity of God’s people and for the ongoing work of building a church where all know they are loved, welcomed, and cherished.

All are welcome.

Beloved Community Spotlight- Kareen Lubanga

Kareen Lares-Lubanga—who also answers to “Mom” more often than anything these days—is someone whose story beautifully bridges home, family, faith, and a whole lot of love.

Born and raised in the Philippines, Kareen moved to Baton Rouge in 2015 at the age of 21, bringing with her both a strong sense of purpose and a deep-rooted faith. Not long after arriving, she met her future husband, Philippe, at a small employee lunch at their workplace. They didn’t talk much that day—but a social media connection the next day changed everything. Within a year, they were married, and this August they’ll celebrate 10 years together.

Today, Kareen and Philippe are raising a lively and growing family in the Shenandoah area. Their sons, Ethan (9) and Enzo (2), keep life full and active—and there’s even more joy on the way, with another baby boy expected this June. Late evenings, after the kids are asleep, often find Kareen and Philippe unwinding with pizza or wings, watching anime, or even dancing—something they’ve loved since their dating days.

Professionally, Kareen’s path reflects both determination and care for others. She earned her degree as a Radiologic Technologist in the Philippines, then continued her journey in the U.S. by pursuing Practical Nursing. Today, she serves as a medication nurse at Sunrise Senior Living, where her compassion and steady presence make a difference in the lives of those for whom she cares. Husband Philippe is a manager for Mary Lee Donuts on Jones Creek Rd.

Faith has always been central to Kareen’s life. She grew up in the Episcopal/Anglican tradition and was baptized and confirmed at St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church in the Philippines, where she was deeply involved in youth and children’s ministry—even helping lead it as she grew older. When she moved to the United States, she hoped to find a church that felt familiar. She found that at St. Margaret’s, where she and her family began attending in December 2024.

What stands out most to Kareen about St. Margaret’s is the warmth of the community. She describes it as welcoming, inclusive, and easy to connect with—a place that feels like home, even far from where she began. For Kareen, her time here is not a new beginning as much as it is a continuation of a strong spiritual foundation, supporting who she is becoming in this season of life.

Ask Kareen what she hopes people remember about her, and her answer is simple: a loving and devoted wife and mother, a dependable friend, and a caring daughter. Spend even a little time with her, and you’ll see that she’s already living that out every day.
