Former Member of Butter Valley Community Church

Annie Clemmer Funk (1875-1912)

Born in Bally, PA, Annie was a Christian missionary who died in the sinking of the RMS Titanic at the age of 38. She was a member of the Hereford General Conference Mennonite Church where her father was a deacon for 25 years. After working with immigrants in Chattanooga, Tennessee and Paterson, New Jersey, Annie was sent to India in 1906 as the first female Mennonite missionary. Annie made plans to travel home when she received a telegram that her mother was ill. She had booked passage on a ship that was delayed due to a coal strike and her ticket was transferred to the RMS Titanic. Unconfirmed reports say she lost her life after giving up her lifeboat seat to a mother and her child.

highlights the individuals, past and present, who shaped the culture, landscape, and economy of Berks County, Pennsylvania.
