Well, we have finally arrived at the last of our “Sacred Summer Sundays.” It has been a wonderful summer celebrating our many special occasions and reflecting on how each Sunday holds a sense of the sacred. I want to thank all of you for being a part of this time at ALUCC.

This Sunday, we will also continue our worship series on “Work in Progress.” Tomorrow’s focus is on “The Church is a Work in Progress.” We all know that the church has done amazing things over the centuries, but it has also been responsible for many mistakes as well. Like any human institution, the church is not perfect and here is always work to be done. What might that mean for us in Avon Lake?

We will share in communion this Sunday, and we will once again be blessed by the incredible worship music.

I look forward to sharing in worship with you tomorrow morning, as we come together for the last time his summer at our combined 10 a.m. service.

In today's Weekend Update, Pastor Mark writes about the change of seasons and we certainly can feel Fall coming - maybe not because of the weather as much as the changes at school and in sports and even restaurant menus! We wish you an enjoyable and safe Labor Day weekend and remind you that this is our last Sacred Summer Sunday with worship at 10:00 AM.

Given all the activity surrounding the church building these days, it seems appropriate that we will continue our “Work in Progress” sermon series this Sunday at ALUCC.

This week, we will move into a conversation focused more on each of us, as individuals. What does it mean for you and I to each be a “Work in Progress.” I sure we have heard friends make such a reference in relation to themselves, and perhaps you have even said it. What might our faith have to say?

We can, as always, look forward to some incredible music, led by our wonderful Director of Music, Scott Ewing. And, as we approach the return to our two-service model in a couple of weeks, we do not want to miss the opportunity to come together as one worshiping congregation.

75% of the spots for the 2026 Tom Cammock Memorial golf outing are filled. Spaces are going fast!!!!! This year‘s event will take place on Saturday, October 3 at Thunderbird Hills Golf Courses in Huron, OH. Proceeds will benefit the contiuning education fund for Tom’s two sons and the summer camping program at Avon Lake UCC . Join us for a day of golf, fellowship, fun and celebrating the life of Tom. Sunday will be one of those wonderfully “full” Sundays at ALUCC! This Sunday we will begin a brief sermon series inspired by the many orange and yellow signs around the region, “Work in Progress.” We will introduce the theme and talk about how that idea relates to our lives (other than travel inconveniences).

As part of the service, we will celebrate our annual “Blessing of the Backpacks” If you or someone you know has started (or will be starting) school, this is a time to come and receive blessing on the upcoming academic year. It is always wonderful to witness the enthusiasm of our students as they are heading back to school.

We will also hear from some of the folks who took part in the Jr. High Service Trip this summer. The impact on the people in Cincinnati, as well as on those who served on this trip is an inspiring message, and we will be able to see some of the images other time at Washington UCC.

This week we will hear one last time from our Summer Bells. It is truly amazing what these talented musicians bring into our worship services, and we so appreciate their sharing their gifts.

And finally, following worship, John Rice will facilitate the latest edition of our “Courageous Conversations,” as we explore the topic of Artificial Intelligence.

Your ALUCC Worship Update: This week marks a very special edition of our “Sacred Summer Sundays.”

Our congregation is blessed by an important congregational care ministry known as our “Stephen Ministers.” This dedicated group of loving individuals offer of their time and gifts to support members of our congregation in challenging times. And this Sunday we will have the opportunity to hear from several members of the Stephen Ministry team at ALUCC and learn more about this wonderful ministry.

We all face challenging times in our lives, and we can all use a little bit of support in those moments. Caring for one another is a core aspect of our identity here at ALUCC as we seek to fulfill Jesus’s commandment to “love one another as I have loved you,” and this Sunday will be a time to hear about one significant way that is done in our church. It will also give the rest of us a chance to offer our appreciation for gifts offered by our incredible Stephen Ministers.

I look forward to sharing this very special worship service with all of you this Sunday at 10:00 AM!
