This month we continue our “Sacred Sundays” theme. It began because we have so many events that we recognize during these summer Sundays at the church. Everything from Mission Trip commissioning, graduation recognition, VBS Sunday, Backpack Sunday…. But what happens when there’s just a regular, normative Sunday thrown in the mix?

Is it still sacred? Let’s find out together, shall we?

My Sermon tomorrow is titled, “Rejoice, it is Flag Day, After All…” and the readings are from Ecclesiastes 2:18-25 and Matthew 6:25-34. I hope to see you all at 10 as we celebrate, well, nothing in particular. Sometimes, those are the best days…..

As each of us reads this message today, our Senior High Service Trip participants will be on their way to Cherryfield, Maine to do some incredible work in service to people in need in that region. I am amazed by the dedication and enthusiasm of this group of faithful folks. There is something truly sacred about what they are doing.

This summer, as we celebrate "Sacred Summer Sundays" at ALUCC, I am hoping that we begin to realize that there is something sacred about much more than we first imagined. There is a sacredness to our service, in our fellowship, and throughout our daily lives. For God is present at all times.

Tomorrow, we will talk about one of our most sacred practices, the act of coming to the Table for Communion. What does it mean for us and to us? Are there times when we miss or ignore the meaning? In addition, we will offer prayers, sing together, and our summer choir will bless us with their music for the first time this summer. A Sacred Summer Sunday to be sure.

Today was certainly a “Sacred Summer Sunday” as we celebrate the incredible young people in our congregation. We take time to recognize the wonderful milestone achievement of high school graduation in the lives of the high school seniors in our congregation. Later in the service, we commission the young people and adults heading on the Senior High Service Trip to Maine. This annual embodiment of service for others is an amazing expression of ALUCC’s commitment to mission, and it is a life-changing experience for the participants.

Pastor Mark's message is "Because it is the right thing to do." Our scripture is Isaiah 58:6-12 and Philippians 2:1-13.

Thank you to Scott and "The Revelators" for our music; to Pastor Beau for the children’s message and to our hosts for a coffee hour celebration.

It is a tradition in our church that children plant flowers in the Secret Garden on the Sunday of Memorial Day. Here are some of our little gardeners and their helpers on May 26. Thank you kids! The birds and butterflies love this spot!
