From Oswald Chambers
The Service of Passionate Devotion
"Do you love Me?... Take care of My sheep." — John 21:16
Jesus did not tell His followers to win people over to their own opinions or personal beliefs. Instead, He told them to care for His sheep—to help people grow in their relationship with Him and be nourished by His truth.
Many Christians think service is mainly about what we do for God. But Jesus teaches that true service begins with who we are in relationship to Him. Discipleship is not built on loyalty to a denomination, a doctrine, or a ministry program. It is built on wholehearted devotion to Jesus Christ.
In Luke 14:26, Jesus makes a strong statement about discipleship. He is not forcing anyone to follow Him. Rather, He is saying that if we choose to be His disciples, our love and commitment to Him must come before every other relationship and priority. Genuine devotion begins when the Holy Spirit opens our eyes and we truly see who Jesus is.
One of the challenges in today's church is that many people are committed to Christian ideas, causes, or traditions without being deeply committed to Christ Himself. It is possible to be passionate about a ministry, a movement, or even a set of beliefs while neglecting a personal relationship with Jesus.
Jesus often challenges human pride and self-sufficiency. Many people want Him to be their friend and helper, but they resist surrendering to Him as Lord. Yet Jesus' life was marked by complete obedience to His Father. His ministry to people flowed out of that obedience. Saving and serving others was the result of His relationship with the Father.
When our devotion is centered only on helping people, we eventually become tired, discouraged, and burned out. Human needs are endless, and people's responses are often disappointing. But when our devotion is centered on Jesus, He becomes the source of our strength, love, and perseverance. Then we can continue serving others even when we are misunderstood, ignored, or mistreated.
The secret of a disciple's life is not great talent, recognition, or achievement—it is a deep and personal love for Jesus Christ. Such a life may seem small and unnoticed, but like a grain of wheat that falls into the ground and dies, it produces lasting fruit and has the power to transform lives and communities (John 12:24).
Reflection
Ask yourself:
Is my devotion focused more on a cause than on Christ?
Do I serve because I love Jesus, or because I feel obligated?
Am I spending as much time with the Shepherd as I am caring for the sheep?
The most effective service for God will always flow from a heart that passionately loves Jesus. When our devotion to Him is first, our ministry to others becomes fruitful, enduring, and filled with His grace.
