Commemorating Tisha B'Av today.

Tonight we begin the observance of Tisha B’Av, the day when the Romans destroyed Jerusalem’s Second Temple ca. 70 CE, and centuries of Jewish diaspora began. This is customarily a day of mourning, when Jews fast, recite Lamentations, and connect to the devastating loss of so long ago. However, it is also the start of a spiritual and emotional arc that includes Tisha B’Av, Rosh HaShanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, and Simchat Torah. Rabbi Karyn D. Kedar reminds us that with the pain of loss and destruction, we can find growth and possibility.

Happy last Shabbat of Pride! Looking forward to celebrating with you Sunday at 2pm for our interfaith pride service at the Emmanuel Lutheran Episcopal Church in Augusta!

On this final Shabbat of Pride, we also celebrate the 2015 SCOTUS decision in Obergfell v. Hodges, which required all states to license and recognize same-sex marriages. In the eleven years since, countless q***r couples have sanctified their marriages with blessings under a chuppah (wedding canopy), fulfilling the obligations for marriage not just of Judaism but of the United States.

This Shabbat, we celebrate each of these couples and remember the many more who paved the way and stayed in committed, loving partnerships—often under great risk—before their marriages were legal.
