Yesterday marked three years since Simpson United Methodist Church and Westminster United Methodist Church began worshiping together and sharing life together.

Over these three years, we have prayed together, shared meals, cared for one another, celebrated joys, carried grief, and learned what it means to be church together.

Yesterday’s worship also brought us to the difficult but necessary work of conflict and reconciliation. Jesus does not promise us a community where people never disagree or hurt one another. Instead, he calls us to stay in relationship, tell the truth, listen to one another, and keep seeking the way of reconciliation.

That feels especially meaningful as we give thanks for these three years together.

If you were not able to join us yesterday, or if you would like to return to the service, you can watch the recording here:

We are grateful for these three years of worshiping and sharing life together, and for all the relationships that have grown along the way.

One week from today, we’ll gather for Keiro no Hi.

It will be a chance to share a meal, spend time together, and especially to honor the elders who have given so much to our families, our church, and our wider community.

Join us Sunday, September 13, following worship for our Keiro no Hi potluck.

Under 80? Bring a main or a side dish to share.

80 or older? Just bring yourself. This celebration is for you.

We look forward to being together.

What is Keiro no Hi?

Keiro no Hi is a Japanese observance often translated as “Respect for the Aged Day,” a time set aside to honor older adults and give thanks for their contributions to family and community.

For Simpson United Methodist Church, a historically Japanese American congregation, celebrating our elders is also a way of remembering the people whose faith, perseverance, stories, service, and care have helped shape the community we share today.

On Sunday, September 13, we’ll celebrate Keiro no Hi together following worship. We hope you’ll join us as we honor our elders and spend time together around the table.

A little behind-the-scenes preparation for Keiro no Hi.

Jane and Karla been folding origami boxes that will be part of a special gift for the elders we’ll celebrate on Sunday, September 13. There is a lot of care going into the preparations, and we’re looking forward to gathering around the table together.

We’ve sent invitations to the elders we know who are 80 and older, but we know our list may not include everyone. If there is an elder in your family or community you would like to celebrate with us, please invite them to come. They are very welcome.

If you plan to bring an elder who may not have received an invitation, please let us know they’re coming so we can make sure we’re ready to celebrate them, too.

Keiro no Hi will be Sunday, September 13, following 10:00 a.m. worship at Simpson.

And as for what goes inside those origami boxes? We’ll save that surprise for our elders.
