Join Simpson United Methodist Church and Westminster United Methodist Church tomorrow morning as we conclude the celebration of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month, through The Wisdom That Carried Us, a special sermon series throughout May.

We are honored to welcome Millie King and Jan Ogawa as our guest preachers on Sunday, May 31st.

Millie King was born in Stockton, California, just months before Pearl Harbor. During World War II, her family was incarcerated at the Stockton Assembly Center and Rohwer War Relocation Center. A retired educator, Millie has continued to help preserve and share Japanese American history through the University of Denver Amache Project and her work with JARCC.

Jan Ogawa is a native Coloradan, Boettcher Scholar, graduate of The Colorado College, and retired United Airlines flight attendant. Since 2009, she has served on the JARCC Board, helping carry forward its mission of “Keeping Heritage and Culture Alive.”

Join us as Millie and Jan help us reflect on the wisdom, stories, and responsibilities we are called to pass on.

ICYMI: Tadashi Nakamura’s new documentary, Third Act, premiered earlier this week! The film is currently available to watch for free on PBS.

About the film: Generations call Robert A. Nakamura the godfather of Asian American film. Tadashi Nakamura calls him Dad. Tadashi turns the camera on his father as they confront art, activism, and aging. From WWII incarceration to cultural awakening and a Parkinson’s diagnosis, Third Act is a tender portrait of legacy, inherited trauma, and the final chapter of a shared creative life. (PBS)

Join Simpson United Methodist Church and Westminster United Methodist Church this morning as we continue to celebrate Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month, through The Wisdom That Carried Us, a special sermon series throughout May.

We are grateful to welcome United Methodist Deaconess Jeri Okamoto-Tanaka as our guest preacher this morning at 10 a.m., as we explore the theme “What Was Silent, What Was Sacred.”

Jeri serves as Director of Spiritual Engagement, Compassion Care, and Justice Ministries at West Los Angeles United Methodist Church, a historic Japanese American congregation. A Sansei and graduate of Claremont School of Theology, she is also an interfaith animal chaplain, spiritual director, mindfulness teacher, grief educator, and creative writing instructor.

Jeri’s faith journey began at Simpson UMC, her childhood church. Her ministry weaves together contemplative practice, compassion-based justice work, and the healing power of story.
